Richard Lewis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 4, 2024.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard Kent Lewis, an indomitable spirit and a relentless force of nature, at the age of 77. He peacefully left this world at his home in Chicago on July 27th, 2024. Dr. Lewis was a man of many facets: a veteran of the United States Army, a dedicated psychiatrist, a lover of technology and politics, and an advocate for excellence in every endeavor. He was known for his meticulously detailed lists, his passion for knowledge, and his unyielding dedication to living life fully. He leaves a legacy of love, kindness, wisdom, and treasured memories that will forever be held dear by all those whose lives he touched.

Dr. Lewis served his country valiantly in the Army from 1966 until 1970. He attended the University of Illinois Medical School where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in June 1979. In his professional life, Dr. Lewis was a beacon of hope and healing. He served active duty Navy personnel at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and devoted over 30 years to the mental health needs of veterans at North Chicago and Miami VA Medical Centers. His unique position as a psychiatrist who was also a veteran allowed him to connect deeply with his patients, treating them with unparalleled respect, compassion, and empathy.

Above all, Dr. Lewis cherished time spent with his family, who, in turn, adored & admired him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Diana Pure; his two sons, Charles (Mandy) Lewis & Kelton (Camille) Lewis; his three stepchildren, Elana (Jason) Tennenbaum, Rebekah (Josh) Grossman, & Isaac (Stephanie) Pure; and his precious grandchildren, Ainsley, Noah, Sydney, Nathan, Aviva & Audrey, all of whom he loved boundlessly. Dr. Lewis leaves behind a legacy of resilience & humor, and an unbreakable spirit. His brother, Stephen Lewis, and his extended family mourn the loss of a man whose impact on this world is profound and enduring.

Our family's heart is broken by the loss of the patriarch whose love, devotion, and strength acted as a guiding light for us all. We find tranquility in knowing he is at peace and joy in all the memories and gifts with which he left us. He will be deeply missed.

Dr. Lewis will be laid to rest at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery, where a service will be held in his honor on Friday, August 9th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation or a mental health charitable organization of your choice.

Our prayers for Dr. Lewis and his family. I had the pleasure of working with him in Miami. He was good to our veterans and a wonderful person.
