Richard McEachern Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 7, 2024.
Richard Alan McEachern, of Brewer, Maine, passed away on September 16, 2024 at the age of 66 at Togus Springs in Augusta. Born on February 2, 1958. Richard made a significant impact during his lifetime, despite the challenges he faced.

At the young age of 20, Richard made a pivotal choice that led to a lifetime of incarceration. Over the 46 years that followed, he evolved into a person of remarkable resilience and growth. While he often felt frustrated that society struggled to see the person he had become, those who knew him understood the depth of his character and the profound changes he underwent.

During his time in prison, Richard devoted himself to gaining knowledge and skills, pursued further education, taking classes with Cornell University, and becoming known as a "jailhouse lawyer".

Lovingly known as "Mac," Richard was instrumental in starting the American Legion Post 218 for veterans in the Maine State Prison. He also worked closely with America's VetDogs, training service dogs for veterans and first responders. Mac transformed his life through his good deeds and improving the lives of those around him. He was a member of the Long Timers Group, a weekly self-help group, contributing to programs such as AA, Jaycees, and NAACP.

Richard is survived by his beloved fiancée, Isabelle Humblot, whom he affectionately referred to as "his girl"; his only daughter, Jenn Morin, and her husband, Patrick, along with her three children and two great grandchildren. He is predeceases by his mother Marjorie A Getchell Mceachern, and his father Calvin L McEachern.

Despite the immense obstacles he faced, Richard's legacy is one of resilience, redemption, and love.

Mac's story is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the potential for transformation. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
