Richard McKENNA Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Aug. 30 to Aug. 31, 2014.

McKENNA, Richard John (Dick)
It is with great sadness that we announce that Richard John (Dick) McKenna passed away peacefully with his family around him on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at the age of 81. Dick was a son, husband, brother, father, father-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and grandfather who was very much loved by his family. He was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Dick moved to London, England with his wife, June in 1957, and then to Vancouver, Canada in 1961. He was an accountant by trade and spent most of his career in the transportation industry, becoming the CFO for the related companies of: Johnston Terminals, Fraser Surrey Docks and Parklane Homes. Dick retired in 1996 and was able to spend more time doing the things he loved which included: working in the yard and garden, playing bridge, reading, keeping abreast of current events, following the BC Lions, and most importantly, spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren who were most valued in his life. Dick was predeceased by his parents, John and Sarah, his brother Ronnie, and two infant daughters, Catherine and Sarah. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, June; children, Fiona (Gary) and Kevin (Ariadna); grandchildren, Brendan, Shannon, Alexander and Connor; nephew Patrick (Barbara) and children Christopher and Caitlin; his sister Pamela and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Ireland. Special thanks to the care staff and physicians at Delta Hospital, many of whom had the opportunity to experience Dick's Irish charm and generous spirit. A Funeral Mass will be served at Sacred Heart Parish, 3900 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's memory to Delta Hospital, 5800 Mountainview Boulevard, Delta, BC, V4K 3V6 would be greatly appreciated and accepted.

I was very sorry to hear that Dick passed away. He made great contribution to Fraser Surrey Dock and he was working for Peeter and me. I am sorry to have missed the funeral mass on the 3rd September 2014 as I was in Europe. Please accept my deepest condolences.

Deepest sympathy to you June, and to your family. Dick was a mentor, friend, best boss I ever had. Dick believed in people even when they didn't always believe in themselves. What he didn't ever believe was that spreadsheets automatically added up. He taught me me many things, one of which was to always double check the math. I will miss our coffee dates.
