Richard "Rick" Gibson Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 28, 2023.
Richard "Rick" Allen Gibson Sr. was born in Baltimore, MD, to Parents George Wathen Gibson and Pauline Elizabeth "Betty" Gibson on September 5, 1943. He fell asleep in death on October 7, 2023 at the age of 80 years old.

His formative years were spent in Ashland, KY and Circleville, OH where he formed many happy memories with Family & Friends. His love of racing, be it by go-cart, motorcycle, or car, was evident from his pre-teen years clear on though the remainder of his life. Highlights of this part of his life included a Florida State Go-Cart Championship as well as numerous Drag Racing wins on motorcycle or car. One of the aspects of his life that he valued most was his friendship with all the "boys" in the "Boys' Racing Team" of Ocala, FL. Rick graduated from Osceola High School (Kissimmee, FL) in 1961 and the rest of his life he called Florida his home.

Rick was a loyal friend, a dutiful son, and a Father who was dearly loved. Those words, as when describing any loved one lost, grossly undersells his immense value to many. He was preceded in death by his Father - George, by his Mother - Betty, and by his Brother - Ronald. He is survived by his Daughter, Lizabeth Beck, by his Son, Richard A. Gibson Jr. and his Wife, Diana Gibson, by his Daughter, Melanie Smith and her Husband, Shawn Smith. Additionally, he leaves behind Grandsons Joshua Gibson and Brandon Smith, Niece, TG McCarthy and her Husband, Tom McCarthy, and Cousins, Phil Grant and Jimmy Thompson. Lastly, among those missing Rick are surviving members of "Boys' Racing Team" - Steve Hutton, Robert "Doc" Haling, Kenny Paramore, Mike Wetstein, Dave DeLisle, and Eric DeLisle.

At Rick's request, he has requested no funeral service, but a Celebration of Life event will be scheduled and shared at a time yet to be determined. In behalf of Rick's Family we wish to thank so many who have reached out with a kind word or practical assistance. He was clearly blessed with many dear friends. Of these, we are most grateful.

I met Rick around the mid 80´s as he was referred to John Delisle and myself with an interest in drag racing motorcycles. He ad an old Honda xr 500 dirt bike that he wanted to sell and buy a Kawasaki 1000. After me riding the dirt bike, I told him that I believed that we could break an existing record for that bike´s class! So, we built the dirt bike into a drag bike and went on to break the existing record on the first attempt and then broke our own record and set 5 more national records from that point on!! Rick was an awesome friend and an awesome person in which I had great pleasure of knowing. We spent many miles traveling in that old green Ford van going all over racing!! I have so many fond memories of time spent with Rick that I couldn´t possibly list all of them here! Rick had an awesome sense of humor and always had a good joke to tell when we saw each other! I´ll always have fond memories and will miss him greatly but the memories will always remain warm in my heart forever. Rick......God Bless and Godspeed my brother until we meet again

Some have a Father, others have a Dad,
There to support you, happy or sad,
Sacrifices aplenty along the way,
Wisdom to guide you day by day,

Time has passed, memories have not,
Grateful to share all that I´ve got,
Thankful, having not just a Dad, but a Friend,
Sorry, our time has come to an end.

I have a lot of memories of my Dad and will share more with time. He was dearly loved & will be surely missed. If anyone asks, please tell them that Dad "took the day off".
