Richard Matthew Russell, age 87 passed away at his home, on the morning of March 1st. He was born on January 16, 1924 in North East to the late Alvin Russell and Etta Mae Smithson Russell. He is survived by sister Ann Russell, daughter JoAnn Speck, son Rick Russell, granddaughters Melissa Yonts and Sara Russell, grandson Ron Magliacane, 4 great grandsons, 2 great-great grandchildren, 3 nephews and 3 nieces. He was preceded in death by 5 siblings; 1 grandson: Carl Duane Speck and his wife: Jean L. Russell. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS AULT. He retired in 1976, from the Bainbridge Naval Training Center. He was a Master Electrician and a Licensed Plumber. Richard was a member of the North East VFW Post 6027 and the Rising Sun American Legion Post 194. He was a former President of the Cecil Co. Hunters Assoc. Richard was a very sociable, outgoing person, who had a zest for life, always quick to lead, to laugh or to extend a helping hand. His family and friends were paramount in his life. For our family, he was a great source of wisdom and strength, laughter and warmth. We will always remember his witty, comical, charming, "Cary Grantesque" type style. He represented the best of the "Greatest Generation", in every way. He will be greatly missed by his devoted and loving family as well as his many friends. Better for having known him, never to be forgotten, and always a part of us. May you rest in peace, Dad (Pop-Pop), we love you always. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Bert Jicha will be held Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East, MD, with visitation for family and friends beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow services in Charlestown Cemetery, Charlestown, MD.
