Dr. Richard C. Shaw

Dr. Richard Clark Shaw, 91, of Avon, husband of Juanita (Cole) Shaw, died Saturday May 31, 2014. Born and raised in Toledo, OH, he was the son of the late Clark and Mabel (Helwig) Shaw. Richard graduated from the University of Toledo and the University of Chicago Medical School. He served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII and the Korean War after which he went into private practice in Toledo. In 1961, Dr. Shaw took a position as Chief Medical Director at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, where he took retirement in the mid 70's. He became Chief Medical Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and later Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine, before retiring to Hutchinson Island, FL. Dr. Shaw was an enthusiastic runner, avid bridge player and accomplished painter. Besides Juanita, he is survived by five children Richard C. Shaw, Jr. of West Hartford, Diane Lee England of Canton, Carolyn S. Shaw of Amesbury, MA, John C. Shaw of Old Greenwich, and Denise Doucette of Cincinnati, OH; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. At Dr. Shaw's request, there will be no formal services.
