Richard Clarence "Ricky" Shoemake, born on March 24, 1956, in Waco, Texas, passed away on September 5, 2025. His life was one of service, dedication, and warmth that touched the lives of many who had the privilege to know him.
A proud retiree from the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas, Richard spent over 35 years honoring the sacrifices of men and women who served their country. His unwavering dedication and compassion made him a respected figure among both colleagues and patients alike. Richard's reassuring and selfless presence will remain etched in the hearts of those he cared for.
Richard began his journey of learning and leadership at Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, where he shone as a member of the ROTC and ROTC drill team. He was known for his loving, kind, and honest nature. Richard was more than just a professional; he was a loyal friend, always ready with a clever joke and an engaging conversation. A jokester at heart, he brought laughter to those around him, and he will be deeply missed for his humor and the joy he shared.
Richard had a profound love for his family, often expressing it in heartfelt phrases. He always made sure to let his brother-in-law, Terry Dean Barnett, know he was "number one in his book." His joy for all things Texas A&M, especially Aggie Football, was infectious. He was a passionate history buff, especially regarding military history. Richard loved to explore the past and study U.S major military conflicts.
He found delight in hobbies that showcased his interests: collecting comic books, reading various American war books, and gathering memorabilia from Texas A&M. His love for science fiction movies, particularly "Star Trek," and playing the strategy game Risk highlighted his joyful spirit.
Richard is remembered by his beloved family. He is survived by his father, Ralph C. Shoemake II; his sister, Cynthia Dianne Barnett; and brother-in-law, Terry Dean Barnett. His nephew, Justin Barnett and wife Kelly Barnett, along with their children Braxton and Brynleigh, and Nephew, Brandon Barnett and wife Sarai Barnett, remain a testament to the joyful legacy he leaves behind.
