Richard Simmons Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2024.
Richard Thomas Simmons (Rick), 80, passed away peacefully at his home in Pensacola, FL, on August 23, 2024, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving wife Betty and close family.

Rick was born on August 1, 1944, in Miami, FL, to Stan and Jane (McCorquodale) Simmons, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Gustafson Lloyd Simmons; his step-sons, James "Jay" Lloyd and Dwayne "Buddy" Lloyd (Wendi); his step-grandchildren, Katheryn "Katy" Rothschild (Michael) and James "Jimmy" Lloyd; and three step-great-grandchildren, Claire, Henry, and August Rothschild. He is also survived by his sisters, Pam Seaton and Pat Simmons (Katharine); nephew David Seaton, and niece Kat Seaton.

Rick's intellectual curiosity led him to earn a BA in Physics from Georgia Tech and an MS in Computer Science. His fascination with early computer languages shaped his career. He played a key role in the development of AT&T Worldnet, one of the earliest Internet portals.

In 1998, Rick married the love of his life, Betty, and together they shared many joyful years exploring flea markets and thrift stores, doing puzzles, and keeping each other company.

Rick was also a proud member of the Pensacola Model Railroad Club. He took great joy in his model trains, often donning a conductor's hat to entertain visitors at the club's elaborate displays, much to the delight of children and adults alike.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Vitas Hospice Care for their compassion and attentive care during Rick's final days. Their support brought comfort to Rick and his loved ones.

Per Rick's wishes, no memorial service will be held. His family encourages those who knew and loved him to celebrate his remarkable life. Donations in Rick's memory can be made to West Florida Railroad Museum, 5003 Henry St, Milton, FL, 32570, https://wfrm.org/.

Rick will be deeply missed, but his legacy of curiosity, kindness, and adventure will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
