Richard Stoer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2024.
Richard "Rich" Leroy Stoer of Fredon, NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 13, 2024. He was 77 years old. A resident of Sussex County NJ for over 45 years, he was born in Newark, NJ on October 20, 1947, and raised in Denville, NJ.

Professionally, Rich wore many hats during the course of his life. Most notably, he was a founder and long-time co-owner of Community Electronics in Morris Plains. After selling his ownership stake in the early 1990s, Rich attended and graduated from the Chubb Institute, before eventually joining Selective Insurance as a Senior Programmer in 1994, ultimately moving on to become a Project Manager and a Database Administrator. Rich retired from Selective in 2015.

Personally, Rich was a man of many talents. He was extremely handy and could build or repair nearly anything, especially anything electronic. He also had a passion for a variety of things including photography, collecting antique Depression-era glass, playing music on his electronic organ/keyboard, anything involving new technology, and cars. But above all, Rich was a devoted family man, and a loving grandpa - a role that he cherished. He was generous with his time, spending countless hours completing home improvement projects on both his family's and his son's homes; working on the family cars including his, his wife's, and his daughter's; and driving to and visiting with his granddaughters, always giving them piggyback rides, playing Twister, reading to or watching cartoons with them, and playing Wordle with the oldest.

Rich was predeceased by his parents, Leroy and Adelaide Stoer. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elaine Nancy Stoer (nee Williams); his daughter Felicia Lynn Stoer, with whom he was always very close; his son Steven Preston Stoer and daughter-in-law Michele Ann Stoer; and his two granddaughters, Samantha Kelly Stoer (age 9) and Madison Alexa Stoer (age 7), who both adored their grandpa. He will be missed tremendously.

At Rich's request, there will be no immediate services, but his family will schedule a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who can, consider making a donation to the Glioblastoma Foundation, or the American Cancer Society.

As a fellow candlestick enthusiast, his contribution with the series of books has been a valuable resource and his, Tom's and Elaine's efforts in that endeavor will provide a legacy.

First time I met Rich was when has car broke down, he and Elaine was walking home when I picked them up. From that day on we became good friends. He would always help me if I needed a hand. What a great guy. He & Elaine spend some vacations together with me & my wife. I surely will miss him.

Collaborating with Rich and Elaine on our series of books on Glass Candlesticks was one of the highlights for my partner Bob and myself and one of our proudest accomplishments. Having lost Bob a few years back after an unexpected bout with cancer, I only wish that I could share with Elaine some wisdom on how to cope with such a profound loss. The void is one that will be with you for the remainder of your own life, but one that you can slowly begin to replace with all of the good memories that offer proof that while he may be physically gone, he will always be part of your life.

Rich and I were friends from earliest elementary school to 10th grade when my family moved to Florida. I was fortunate to see Rich a couple times on return trips to New Jersey 20 or more years ago. He always had a good time, and nary a negative word about anyone. I'm sorry he's gone.

Rich was one of the first kids to make friends with me when my family moved to Denville. We were 8 y.o! The friendship continued through H.S. and years later met up with mutual friends in Denville. I´ll never forget his kindness nor his smile. Sending prayers to his family.

Dear Elaine-- We are so sorry for your loss. We pray that the void left will soon be filled with your happy memories of your long life together. The Williams/Willies connection began long before we were born and Rich was a welcomed addition. He was loved and will be sorely missed.
With love,
Doug & Rhonda
