I grew up in Maple Lake and played many high school baseball games in Delano with Mr. Traen at the helm. I married a Michelle Dewitte, a Delano native and we moved there 5 years ago. I never new the man personally, but have always respected what he had done with the Delano baseball program. I am very sorry for your loss.

Not too long ago I was doing a remodel job for an older woman. Talking to her I found that We both went to Delano. She then went on to tell me how She went to colledge with Dick Traen in StCloud. It was up to Dick to find them rides back to Delano for weekends, often times in the back of a bakery truck sitting on pallets. Still rember one thing from Jack Traen's School of Driving - 'yellow means give'r hell'. I still practice that on a regular basis. class of 87'

After viewing this guest book, it's obvious how many lives were touched by Mr. Traen. What a wonderful guy he was to many. My memories of course were not to say "SHUT UP" in his class. I can't remember how many times I ever had to write "upshut" but I know if I didn't have them done, he would assign more and your name would be on the chalk board. I don't say "shut up" very often at all to this day. To the Traen family, may God comfort you and help lighten your hearts during this most difficult time. God bless!

Dear Traen Family, The entire town of Delano is grieving with you this week.
R.T. was one my favorites...even though I was one of the many who had to write "up-shuts" a lot. He taught me the game of baseball as I did stats for the team. I'm sure I screwed them up but he never got mad at me! The biggest compliment ever was when he told me I didn't throw like a girl! I'm very impressed that he made it through his life with his "first wife" whom he obviously adored!
Thanks for the memories Mr. Traen!

Dick, what a man who can touch so many's lives and give those people stories they will tell for the rest of their lives. I too was a student of his back in the early 60's. You never knew what you were walking into when you entered his classroom. Anything from a live garter snake in the classroom or eating a roasted caterpillar. Never a dull moment. I have him to thank for teaching "a girl" the correct way to slide into a base! All of us will miss and remember him.
Something tells me his mother Ellen had a baseball coaching job already lined up for him on one of those heavenly teams!

To the Traen Family,
RT affected so many people positively. Many things he said or did included a lesson that may not be obvious right away, but that you would get to if you gave it a little thought and peeled off the surface just a bit.
Even though most of my time with RT and most of my memories revolve around baseball (so many good memories), one of the things I'll remember most is this: He was a teacher that cared not only about teaching the courses and teaching the game of baseball, but he also cared deeply about helping kids become better people. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Traen family.

October 19, 2006
Dear Traen family - Our sympathy to all of you. RT was one of my favorite people in HS. He was always smiling and teasing. He was my driver's training instructor and it was lucky for me that he was. I have never been very good at Rights and Lefts for some reason. I couldn't admit it in HS - that would be like saying I couldn't tie my shoes in my mind. It dawned on me that if Mr Traen was sitting in the passenger seat he was "on my right". His nickname and initals of R.T. would be all I would need to get thru the training and it would also work for my driver's test. If the instructor or Mr Traen said turn Right, I pictured RT sitting next to me (with his foot on the extra brake all the time) and I would be able to save myself lots of embarrassment. Turns out I never out grew confusing my left and rights, but luckily I have been able to picture RT sitting next to me in that driver's training car all my life. I never told him what a help he has been to me all these years - and will continue to be, so I wanted you to know instead. He was a great guy and will be missed by many.

Carol, Terri, Tom, Todd, Tracy, and the entire Traen family,
R.T. had a great impact on everyone's life in Delano and the surrounding community.
When I think of R.T. I think of baseball obviously. More specifically, I think of the trick plays (screener and other elaborate pick-off plays), squeeze bunts, and the pound of M&M's I would always have to buy to get my glove back when I left it at the park.
R.T was also an educator. To this day after nearly 20 years I still find myself on the ball field calling for a ball saying, "I have it" instead of, "I got it" because R.T. drilled into my head that "I got it" was improper english.
In his classroom, you never wanted to ever get caught saying, "shut up" - you'd be writing "up shuts" for eternity.
I share all of these memories with my kids as I'm sure all of his former students do. He will never be forgotten.
God Bless you all!

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of "Jack". He touched so many lives and left an impression on each and every one. I can still hear him yelling "Andy" regardless of if I was in class, down the hallway or on the ball field. If he wanted your attention, he got it. Drivers ed., baseball, biology, and serving as his teachers aid are all very fond memories. I will remember him as a coach, mentor, teacher, but mostly as a friend. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

To the Traen Family,
Like so many others, I too, was one of Mr. Traen's biology and driver's training students. He was definitely one-of-a-kind. I will always remember him for his great nicknames for people, including myself (the gripper) as well as his great phrases. I have even caught myself repeating his logic of "practice makes permanent" to my own kids! Oh, and when he would crack a joke that we didn't get, he would say "that one will have you laughing on Sunday morning" - meaning we would finally understand the punchline while we were sitting in church. Sometimes he was right!
It is also very endearing to me that his first wife (as he referred to her)was his only wife and I would like to pay tribute to their commitment to each other and to their family.
What a guy. What a great, great guy. He will be missed by many.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Traen Family,
I was so saddened to hear about "Jack's" death on the radio yesterday. He was such a nice man. I often tell people about my driver's training experience for a couple of reasons. My first accident happened to be on my first day of behind-the-wheel. Some guy bumped into us at an intersection and R.T. just rolled down the window and told the guy not to worry about it. I also remember him asking me one Saturday morning "what number is KQ on this radio?" It was Terri's first morning on the air at KQ, he said, and he was so proud of her as we drove along listening. I was just happy not to have to hear the CCO ag forecasts all day, because I had been told that's how it would be from my brothers.
He represented our town, our school, and our teams very well over the years and I'm proud to say that I knew him.
We'll miss you Mr. Traen.

Todd, Tom, Teri, Traci and Mrs. Traen,
When I heard of the death of your Dad, I started to remember the times my brother Dean and I would hang around your house during the summer vacation and during MEA breaks while we were visiting our Grandparents. Also the times he would open the gym and while the old guys were on the court playing Basketball, we would be up on the stage playing floor hockey. But the most vivid memory is when we brought a slow pitch softball team to play in the 4th of July Tournamet, and of course your Dad was hanging around the field running things. In that way, he will be in the hearts of many athletes and sports fans, as someone who loved the games that he played, coached, and watched. My family and I have you and your families in our prayers, and may God bless you in this time of need.

If you shared a field with R.T., you knew that nobody embodied the spirit, the courage and the dedication of amateur baseball better than Dick Traen. R.T brought to the game, an incredible wit, a quick smile, an easy-going demeanor, and an uncanny ability to see what is best for the game of baseball. As always, the game will go on. Next spring we will begin a new season without him, yet dedicated to R.T.’s memory. This year, however, the game of baseball will pause, and shed a tear, in remembrance of its favorite son, R.T. For all your good work, for your humor, your dedication and your selflessness, may God bless and keep you, R.T.

I miss you more every second. You were an unbelivable grandpa and an even better mentor. More than anything I will miss your sense of humor. I guess it was your time to say, "HI HO PAINT, LET'S GET WHERE WE AIN'T!!!!"
I love you so much and will think of you always,
Abby

Terri & Family
When things like this happen, we wonder and question the reasoning and why's and there are really no answers to be given and that is a hard thing to take when you lose someone so dear to you. All we really have is our faith, what we believe happens when you leave this earth, why this happens is and probably always will be unknown to us here on earth but if you believe in God then you believe that your Dad is safe and comforted by him and now watching you from heaven above with a proud smile on his face that he has family and friends that loved him.
That is all we really want is to have a family and friends to love and care for us. It sounds like your Dad had all that and more.
You will smile again one day, I know, I lost my Dad too and it was the hardest thing I ever had to deal with, but you will start to have more laughter than tears as time goes by, but do not rush it, let it take it's coarse. I truely believe that humor and laughter is the best medicine it's what got me through my terrible time. So please try to laugh even though you are hurting and sad, it will help you through this.
Take care of yourself and your family,
Hug your kids so tight and be sure to say "I LOVE YOU" every chance you get.

To the Traen Family,
Like so many others, I had the wonderful opportunity of having Mr. Traen for my biology teacher and driver's ed instructor. He was a great teacher, and I loved his sense of humor. I am sorry for your loss and hope you are comforted by the fact that he touched so many people's lives and will be fondly remembered by so many. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.
