A kind, thoughtful, extremely gifted, enthusiastic humanitarian I shall always remember. Richard and I worked together as volunteer physicians in the aftermath of the massive 1972 Managua earthquake. We participated together in many other volunteer projects in Central America. Regardless of the circumstances, Richard's enthusiasm, ingenuity, his great passion for life always was boundless. In the memories of all who knew him, Richard will live on.

I was sorry to hear of Dr. Whittaker's passing. We were neighbors on Herrick Road in the Canal Zone where my father was also a Physician at Gorgas Hospital. Recall great times in the 70s. I had reached out to him earlier but never re-connected. My condolences to his family and community, what a great loss.

With great sadness in my heart for this terrible loss of a friend and doctor, neighbor and humanitarian. My sincere sympathies to the Whittaker family. I've had a flood of memories of Doc Whit explaining what was broken, to how long it would take to heal, I do believe he's set or injected each of my family members in one limb or another; of football games and there's the Doc and Peg watching our boys - his always played basketball, he supported everyone's kids; July 4th parades and him driving his old beautiful car; stories, he always had stories because he experienced much more than most of us; his assurances that our kids would all grow up and be ok; and of course, his support of the Polar Bear Plunge on New Year's Day! May your family realize the joy and service Doc Whit brought to SO many people. May he rest in peace!

Dearest Peggy and family,

How very sad we are to know that dear Dr. Whittaker has died. I can only imagine that St Peter himself was at the Pearly Gates to wave him through, for a better humanitarian, good, gentle man could not be found.

Pottstown and the world has lost a noble friend. Whenever I encountered you and Dick, he was smiling and excited about his Life and what he could do to make the world a better place.

His life mattered to us and Pottstown. He was a leader and inspired others to make a difference.

His place in Heaven is assured, and I pray for comfort for you. I know you will miss him, and so will we.

Lesley and John Duall
