Very sad to learn of Richard's passing.
Hugh Carter
February 15, 2018
My sincere condolences to Richard's family on your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Richard early on in his career in real estate consulting in Vancouver and then Australia he presented a rare combination of a strong real estate acumen with a quiet, philosophical perspective. He always brought his own principled and insightful perspective. We always enjoyed reconnecting throughout his many years in the industry while sharing memories and laughter. Years ago he kindly gifted me a Tibetan prayer wheel, which remains on my desk to this day and is given regular turns. It will now hold a special meaning for me as I will always remember Richard each time the spinning mantras are released. I will miss Richard as both a friend and learned colleague.

Richard was just a genuinely great guy - he knew how everything worked, but had many ideas about how things could be improved and wasn't shy about sharing those ideas - especially nearer the end. Funny, smart, supporting and thoroughly unselfish. Had many a good laugh over the years. We will all miss him.

I knew Richard for almost fifteen years, first as a client and then as a colleague on consulting projects. He was bright, witty and always a joy to be with and I will sorely miss him.

Richard and I met just this past year at a Callanish retreat in Spring and again this past fall. Our group members shared much about our cancer journeys. Richard's witty and creative expressions were both beautiful and sad. He modeled for us how to meet grief and how to be loving of our families as we journey towards the end. We were honored to know Richard at a special time of his life.to his family I send wishes for your peace of mind and comfort in time. Patricia Ford

I attended elementary school with Richard in Ottawa. Although I did not know Richard well, we got along as class mates. He always left me with the impression that he was a deep thinker, wise beyond his years and was destined for great things. I remember his smile and laugh well. I moved to Vancouver from Ottawa in 1981 and wish I knew he was close by. It would have been great to reconnect and I believe we would have found something in common in his quest to promote public good and harmony.
May your family find great peace and pride in Richard's legacy!

I last saw Richard when attended the December 18, 2018 Public Hearing in Richmond, BC, to present on land values: that night as he was on his way home I email congratulated him how well he spoke: I'm glad I did.

I had the great fortune and genuine pleasure of knowing Rick briefly through a mutual friend. What a thoughtful and gentle man he seemed. There are not many folks who leave this kind of impression. A wise old soul. Safe travels.

Rick was one of the most interesting people I have ever known. He was complex, brilliant, sardonic and witty at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him, as seldom as it was in the last couple of decades, but we went back to a time when we were both in the real estate world and he would come to Toronto for conferences, and we had lots of fun and special times together, as friends.

Dear Richard. You definitely made a mark on this earth and on the people you met along the way. It has been my utter privilege to have known you as a friend and colleague for 25 years including some very recent collaborations. The imprint you have left on me is that of a highly intelligent and caring man, with a brilliant sense of humour. You were a gifted orator and natural performer, but also very private and utterly humble. You contemplated the complexities of the world but I believe you really appreciated the simple things in life. You will be missed but never forgotten. My sincere sympathies to your family on their loss.

I have very fond memories of working with Richard on many projects over the years. He had quite an impact on many people with his gentle manner and humour. A former employee of mine now in New Zealand put it well:
"I actually think of Richard on an almost daily basis as I bike past a Cushman Wakefield branded car on my street on my way home.
He was a pleasure to work with, practical, and always had a smile.
Vancouver has certainly lost a visionary with his passing!"

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Richard. He was part of a team of consultants that I worked with back in the early/mid 1990s for a major retail company and developer. I recall his humour and steadfast professionalism. It is amazing all the work and contributions he has made to municipalities and IC&I industry over the years. My warmest thoughts and condolences to his friends and family.

I had the privilege of knowing Richard both professionally and personally since the mid-80's. He was a gentle, kind, compassionate and cerebral soul who would dazzle and confuse you with his intellect.I wish I understood half of what he was talking about? I will miss his wry sense of humor and wonderful words of wisdom about life. Godspeed to all

When we had Richard on our team we always knew we were making decisions based on good data. The infrastructure builders and development community will feel the loss of his analytical and sage advice for many years. He was a brilliant, humorous colleague whose passionate and caring personality I will deeply miss.

Richard touched my life in many ways: as a friend, as a mentor, but most importantly, as a wonderful human being. His brilliance was complemented with sharp wit and a great sense of humour. I will always treasure the time I had with Richard and feel truly blessed to have known such an amazing person. A life far too short, but definitely well lived!
