Richard Yohn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 15, 2022.
Richard "Dick" W. Yohn, age 78, of Greencastle, PA, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2022, at WellSpan York Hospital with his family by his side. The son of the late Willard H. and Mary Agnes (Piper) Yohn, Richard was born on the family farm in Shade Gap, PA on August 25, 1943. It is there on the farm that he learned the values of faith, family, and hard work, all of which served him well throughout his life.

Mr. Yohn was a 1961 graduate of Southern Huntingdon High School. Upon graduation, he moved to Minneapolis, MN for a brief time and worked for Delta Airlines before returning to Shade Valley. Shortly thereafter, he met his wife, Carolyn, whom he married on November 2, 1968 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shade Gap. They began their life together in New Hampshire where he worked, first, for Echlin Inc. as an auto parts salesman, and then for Continental Homes transporting and setting modular homes. In 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Yohn and their three young daughters made their way back to Pennsylvania, settling and remaining in their home in Greencastle for nearly fifty years. It was then that he began his career as a local truck driver for such companies as Roadway, St. Johnsbury, and New England Motor Freight.

Mr. Yohn was a proud Teamster, and he belonged to many local civic organizations including the VFW Post 6319. In recent years, he swapped his tractor-trailer for a mower and worked for Antrim Township as a caretaker of the Community Park. He was a lifelong Roman Catholic, and he and his wife are members of St. Mark's Catholic Church.

Golfing and traveling were among Mr. Yohn's favorite pastimes, and he enjoyed spending the winter months in Bradenton, Florida with his wife. He had an affinity for sports cars, racing, and ice cream, and he had a gift for talking and storytelling. Above all, Mr. Yohn enjoyed spending time with his friends and beloved family, traveling far and wide to watch and cheer on his grandchildren perform and play in their academic, artistic, and sports activities.

Mr. Yohn is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Carolyn (Shoop) Yohn,; three cherished daughters, Tonya Woody (Doug) of Fort Mill, SC, Tara Triplett (Jon) of Lenoir, NC, and Tamela Drews (Greg) of Marietta, GA; seven adored grandchildren, Benjamin, Evan, Carter, Rowan, Ayden, Piper, and Ryker; and seven siblings, Jerry Yohn (Sue), Barbara Groce (Mac), Jim Yohn, Bob Yohn (Ivy Lee), Phil Yohn (Darlene), Tim Yohn (Rose Ann), and Danny Yohn (Pam); and a large extended family and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 11 AM at St. Mark the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 395 S. Ridge Ave., Greencastle, PA 17225, where Rev. Fr. Walter Guzman will celebrate. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the above church and address. I didn't know Mr. Yohn personally but felt like I did. I worked with his daughter Tonya for many years and loved listening to all the stories of his adventures. It was obvious by the way Tonya spoke of him and by the look on her face when she did that he was the light of her life. My prayers are with you Tonya and the rest of your family. Love, Jerri

What a great guy Dick was always enjoyed his stories and the time the 4 of us shared together. You were both friends I will always cherish the memories we made. Carol I know how hard this is, it was hardest thing I ever endured. Hang in there it takes a lot of time to heal a broken heart. My prayers are with you and your family. Can´t begin to express my sorrow for you. Love Pam
