Richard Yusem Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 15, 2024.
Richard Gary Yusem, passed away after a long illness on July 27, 2024, at the age of 67 in Boca Raton, Florida. Born on November 25, 1956, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Richard grew up in Moorestown and Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy, Cherry Hill East High School, and the Tall Ships America sailing and education program where he sailed around the world. These experiences broadened his horizons and instilled a lifelong sense of adventure.

Richard was a serial entrepreneur with a strong presence in several industries, including home building, agriculture, and transportation. He was a key executive at Yusem Homes, a family-owned Top 400 homebuilding business with numerous developments throughout South Florida, particularly in Delray Beach and West Boca Raton. His entrepreneurial spirit also flourished in commercial agriculture, where he cofounded Oasis Tree Farms in Pahokee, Florida. Richard also made his mark in the transportation industry with Atlantic Bus Sales in Pompano Beach, Florida, a top-tier custom bus fabrication and service company, where he led the company until he retired.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Richard had a profound passion for the outdoors, including boating and motorsports. An avid deep-sea fisherman, he enjoyed being on the water with friends and family. His love for cars was equally evident as he enjoyed building and racing hot rods and vintage cars and was the proud owner of the one-of-a-kind "Eye of the Tiger" Harley Davidson. His enthusiasm for motorsports took him on frequent road trips to events like the Indianapolis 500 and Sturgis.

Richard's life was not just about his passions and businesses; it was deeply rooted in family and relationships. He is survived by his son, Alexander Yusem of Boca Raton, sisters Nancy (Yusem) Senich from McLean, Virginia, Ellen (Yusem) Stewart from Jupiter, Florida, and brother Brian Yusem of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Myrna Yusem, and his aunt and uncle, Arlene and Hank Witten.

Richard will be remembered for his vibrant personality, entrepreneurial drive, and passion for motorsports. His legacy endures through his family, businesses, and the lives he touched.

Thank you to Nancy, Ellen and Brian for a beautiful service and reception for Richard yesterday.

Richard was the consummate professional. When I saw the Eye of the Tiger for the first time, it was no surprise to me how immaculately he kept his shop, particularly his office. Reminded me of a senior partner's office at a law firm.

Whether it was about business or personal, Richard and I always had a laugh when we spoke.

On the phone, when he got serious and needed to make a point, he sounded like Tom Brokaw.

I will always remember him as a consummate professional, and he will always be a good friend.
