Rick Carlisle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 14, 2002.
RICK E. CARLISLE was born to William Earl Carlisle and Eloise Bunyard Carlisle on April 27, 1945 in Meridian, Mississippi. He moved to Pasadena, Texas at the age of 3 and obtained his formal education at Richey Elementary, Jackson Junior High, and Pasadena High School. He attended the University of Houston on football and baseball scholarships and graduated in 1967 with a BBA degree. An outstanding athlete, Rick played all sports but excelled as an All-State High School quarterback and a ranked baseball player. He was also voted Mr. Pasadena High School in 1963 and graduated a well-respected class leader. Rick has excelled in sales, sales management, and marketing in the Houston new home building industry for thirty plus years and has worked for such industry giants as Friendswood Development Company, Perry Homes, Ashton Woods, Village Builders, Kimball Hill, and most recently David Powers Homes. In positions such as Vice President for Sales and Marketing and Sales Manager, Rick's gift to the future of the home building industry has been a unique ability to mentor many who are now very successful in the industry. Young men and women eager to learn his outstanding people skills and sales techniques were drawn to Rick. Rick Carlisle has served the Lord for years through the First Baptist Church of Pasadena, Texas. He served as the Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee which displayed courage and had an intense vision to move the church to its present location reaching southeast Harris County. He also served on two pulpit committees, as Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Sanctuary Choir member, Sunday School director, and Sunday School teacher, especially working with High School students and young adults. Many still stay in touch with their teacher, mentor, and friend. However, some of Rick's greatest heartfelt contributions of life were to his family as a caring, compassionate, and loving husband, father, son, and brother. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Allen G. Thurman. Survivors include his loving, devoted wife of 35 years, A. Kathryn (Kathy) Carlisle of Clear Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Kristin Ann and Ben James Still of Houston; son and daughter-in-law, Eric Allen and Sarah Elizabeth (Beth) Carlisle of Dallas, Texas; father and mother, William Earl and Eloise Carlisle of Pasadena; sister, Rita S. Carlisle of Houston; mother-in-law, Alma M. Thurman of Pasadena; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Daniel Allen and Sharon K. Thurman of Houston. Pallbearers include: Pasadena High School lifelong football friends: Thomas A. Allen, George Cheshire, Frank A. Hale, and William F. Marceau. Church friends and M.D. Anderson transporters: David C. Dittmar, John Ferrell, Earl Goings, Jim Harden, Doug MIlls, Robert Mills, W.A. (Butch) Thompson, and John Elam. Young men who looked to Rick as Mentor: Randall Fluke, Mike Hughes, and Bill Moore. In his many hospital stays, Rick was often described as a Christian gentleman. Others saw his demeanor and realized he possessed the love of our Lord. He fought every battle intensely and aggressively but he was always gracious, kind, and so appreciative of his care. The family wishes to thank Drs. H. Kantarjian, S. Giralt, Kurbegov, S. Verstovsek, and Glover; Kevin White, P.A.; Kay Rose, nurse; Theresa Sullivan, Clinical Nurse; Gay McCoy, BMT Transplantation; nurses, Minnie Longoria, Hai Dong, and Kim; Carla, a special early morning angel; and the many other outstanding nurses and caregivers at M.D. Anderson's G12th floor southwest. Dear Kathy, Kristen & Eric,

I was so saddened to hear about Rick's death and even more saddened that I learned about it after the service. Rick hired me straight out of high school to work with him at Perry Homes in 1980. He was a great mentor. I worked for him for five years at Perry and was honored to work with him again at North American Mortgage. His leadership skills and professionalism are things I will always remember about him. He was a great man and I will miss him dearly.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.

Dear Kathy and Family,

I am so sorry to learn of Ricky's death. He and I played baseball together in 1965 at U of H. He was a good friend and close team mate. I am just sorry we did not keep in touch over the years. Please accept my condolence in your time of sorrow.

Sincerely,

John R Bumpus

Dear Kathy, Kristin, and Eric...and family,

I was so saddened to hear the news that Rick had passed away. I have kept in touch with you and your challenges through your emails, and from Pam Thompson. I hope you know that I will continue to pray for your family as you regroup in these very tough times, and that I have to smile...knowing that Rick is seeing the face of Jesus at this very minute. How wonderful it is to have that peace and comfort and the assurance that there is no more pain, no more hospital stays, no more treatments...and he is there in his heavenly home...probably working with the building committee there already!

I am here if you ever need me...

I love you all,

Deah

Kathy,

You probably don't remember me, but I was saddened to read of Rick's death in this morning's paper. My childhood name was Virgie Goodson. My sister Patsy and I attended Jackson Jr. High and PHS with you and Rick. I was in the class of 1963, too, and I remember how handsome Rick was as our "Mr. PHS". (I was jealous of how pretty Gloria Bryant was, too - hehe). Rick's obituary has brought a flood of memories - of you as our Homecoming Queen walking across the football field under all those floodlights. I was in the band, on the same football field, playing my French horn as you accepted the accolades. You looked so glamourous! You and Ricky and Gloria and Cindy Brown (and some others) probably had no idea what an inspiration you were to those of us who weren't popular and successful and well-known.

Anyway, please accept my condolences. I pray that you will have the strength to get through this difficult time. God Bless You.

Marie
