Rin was a fantastic and well-loved Chemistry teacher, and following this was a great friend. I always admired his positive outlook on life and willingness to laugh! He was a special person and will be missed by all who knew him.

Dr Raap was my chemistry professor at CC around 1981 and was such a caring teacher. Sad to hear he is gone.

Dr Raap tried very hard to teach me organic chemistry at Camosun College in 1981-82. That he succeeded at all says more about his teaching skills than my study skills. It's a difficult subject! C6H12O6?
To new students, it was obvious at first glance that Rin was a long-distance runner. He had the skeletal build and the slow, blissful, over-oxygenated demeanour of a runner. He had shoulder-length hair, wore Birkenstock sandals and wool socks, and he walked so slowly it occasionally made him late for class.
It seemed he ran 10 kilometers six days out of seven, and I asked him how he managed to fit it in. He said, You simply decide that no matter what else happens on any given day, you run. He also said he would never pay more than $20 for a pair of running shoes, which was low even in 1981!
One day he came into the chemistry prep room shaking his head and told me (an older student) that his younger students didn't know how to time a chemical reaction using the second hand on the analogue clock on the wall of the lab. At that point we both knew the world was in an irretrievable state of decline.
I didn't know Rin outside of class, but I offer my condolences here on the passing of a man I admired.
RIP.

I am much saddened to know that Dr. Raap -- who taught with a blend of knowledge and warmth, as I witnessed at C.C. in the early '70s -- was taken by the same condition which took my father Giles eight years ago. My condolences to his family and relatives.

Dr. Raap was my chemistry teacher many years ago at Camosun College. I remember him as taking time to talk to me after class which, fondly remembered after all these years, testifies to his caring and approachable nature. RIP Dr. Raap - David Young

We were saddened to read about Rintje's passing. We knew him through the running community. You could always pick up his long flowing locks in the race. He always had a smile for you and interesting discussions after the race. He will be missed. Our condolences to his family. Mike and Zora Creery
