Rita Eatinger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2025.
Rita Eatinger (née Hinrichs), age 89, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024, in Oakbrook, Illinois. Born on May 11, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the beloved only daughter of two hardworking German immigrant parents. From her first breath to her last, Rita lived a life marked by strength, beauty, and deep love from those around her.

Rita pursued her education at Wright College in Chicago, where she laid the foundation for a life of dedication and service. After college, she began her professional journey at EKCO. Following marriage and the joys and challenges of raising five children, Rita returned to the workforce with determination and grace. She worked in insurance at two different doctors' offices, balancing her career with her unwavering commitment to family.

Her devotion extended far beyond the home and workplace. Rita was an active volunteer throughout her life. She served as a Girl Scout leader, Brownie leader, and Boy Scout leader-roles that reflected her nurturing spirit and desire to guide young minds. While living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she volunteered with HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth), offering support to vulnerable children in need. Back in Chicago, she gave her time to WTTW fundraising drives, contributing to public broadcasting efforts that aligned with her love of learning and community engagement.

Rita's creativity found expression through sewing; she lovingly crafted quilts for family members that became treasured heirlooms. She also had a passion for writing and reading-activities that enriched her life and inspired those around her. Whether traveling to new places or entertaining friends at home, Rita brought warmth and joy wherever she went.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Eatinger; daughter Cynthia Eatinger; granddaughter Samantha Howard; grandson Mark Peterson; and brother John Hinrichs.

Rita leaves behind four devoted children: Kevin, Pamela, Kristine, and John; ten cherished grandchildren: Patrick, Brittney, Will, Briana, Jimmy, Sean, Hannah, Emily, Quinn, and Keiran; as well as five great-grandchildren who will grow up hearing stories of their remarkable great-grandmother.

Rita was a loving mother and grandmother whose compassion touched many lives. Her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured and the countless lives she impacted through kindness and service.

May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
