A Man You Had to Know
For my Father...
He was a man you had to know
to truly see the way he showed
his pride, his hurt, his quiet grace-
the stories etched across his face.
He wore his past like worn-out boots,
his cap stitched tight with airborne roots.
A soldier´s steadiness in stride,
his silence deep, his shoulders wide.
He didn´t talk of feelings much,
but showed them in a gentle touch-
Wingnut waiting by his chair,
as birds flocked in with gentle care.
He loved the silence most of all,
the way the morning light would fall
across the porch, the trees, the land-
a cup of Pepsi in his hand.
He spoke of things he built and earned,
of lessons hard and pages turned.
You´d hear the war inside his voice-
not regret, but weathered choice.
He didn´t open up with ease.
His truths were guarded, like old keys.
But if he let you close enough,
you saw a man both strong and rough-
Yet soft beneath it all.
He lived with grit, and left the same-
no speeches, banners, none of that fame.
Just birds in flight, a quiet friend,
and one more walk that did not end.
And though he´s gone, the echoes stay-
in habits, feathers, things he´d say.
In cap and patch and weathered face,
in loyalty, in steady pace.
He was a man you had to know.
And if you knew, you´d understand-
he is still here, in this quiet land.

Robbie was a great step dad . Even though my mom and him had been divorced for over 20 years he always kept in touch. I will miss are talks and the good advice he gave.
