Robert Bannerman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 3 to Jun. 5, 2011.
BANNERMAN, Robert Bruce June 4, 1927 - June 1, 2011 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Bannerman. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Bob was born in 1927 in Calgary, and lived there all his life except for the four years he spent at the University of Alberta earning his Bachelor of Commerce degree. Bob and his dad, Jack Bannerman, owned Bannerman Insurance Ltd for many years. After his father's retirement, Bob ran the business, enjoying the company of every person he met. Bob was highly respected in the insurance industry. He was President of both the provincial and national Insurance Brokers Associations, and was named Insurance Man of the Year for Canada in 1969. Bob was also a long-time community volunteer for many organizations locally and internationally. He was head usher for the Calgary Stampeders Booster Club for many years and volunteered in Dominica and Poland for Canadian Executive Services Overseas (CESO). He was a Trustee for Scarboro United Church for fifty years. Especially close to his heart was his work at Connaught Community School, where he volunteered every Tuesday morning to help children learn English as a Second Language. The kids loved "Mr. Bob", and sent a mountain of hand-drawn cards and letters when he was in the hospital last year. Most of all, Bob loved his family. He was happily married to Norma for fifty-eight years, involved in all of his children's lives, and delighted in his five grandchildren. Cherishing many happy memories of his wonderful sense of humour and times spent together, are his wife Norma, his children Ginny Bannerman (Don Radford), John Bannerman (Nadine), Rob Bannerman (Lisa), his granddaughters, Elyse and Katie Bannerman, and grandsons, Ryan, Bradley and Jordan Bannerman. At the family's request, no flowers please. Donations may be made directly in Bob's name to support Connaught Community School. Cheques payable to "Education Matters" may be sent to 4th Floor, 1221 - 8 Street S.W., Calgary, Alberta, T2R 0L4, or online to www.educationmatters.ca , and designated to "Connaught School in Memory of Bob Bannerman." A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.) on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In living memory of Bob Bannerman, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.

Dear Norma

We have just learned of Bob's passing today - Feb 9th - and mourn the loss of that amazing man with all of you. He was so relational - we don't know of anyone who didn't warm to him - and you Norma - immediately. We just want you and your family to know that his memory will live on in our lives, and in the lives of our children. I will call you when we get home in mid March Norma.

Much love and prayers

Dear Norma and Family

My memories of Bob go back to U of A and the second floor of Athabasca Hall. There was always something going on there.

Later I recall that Bob led the Calgary Branch, U of A Alumni, to have a Chancellor's chair, carved and presented to what was then the Calgary Branch of the University in the early days of the Calgary campus.

We have not crossed paths in recent years but we do have some fond memories.

Our sincere sympathies to you and your family at this time.

Dear Mrs. Bannerman and family,

We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Bannerman's (Bob's)passing. He will always be remembered as a pillar to the Scarboro community. His "happy go lucky" spirit will always be a cherished memory. I will always have fond memories of him, whether it is him driving in his convertible or wearing his kilt for Robbie Burn's day...or him and Mrs. Bannerman being simply out and about. My mom (Betty Smart) has always considered you and your family as wonderful friends and I know is saddened by his passing.
Our thoughts are with you.

Much love,
Betty Smart, Jacolyn and Lorenzo Lecce

Dear Norma and family:
I was so sorry to hear of Bob's passing - wish I could give you a big hug, Norma.

I've known Bob as a neighbour, a fellow member of Scarboro United Church, and as fellow volunteer in the Partners in Literacy program. Throughout the past 30 years, Bob never failed to amaze me with his concern for others and his cheerful offers of friendship, help, and support. He always had time to lend a helping hand.

Bob was like a magnet to the students at Connaught School - everyone wanted to read with Mr. Bob. There was nothing flashy about him but the students loved his quiet manner and obvious respect for them. For many, he was probably the grandpa they had had to leave behind when their parents emigrated to Canada. He will be missed.

I'm writing this from our Ontario cottage so sadly I will not be able to attend Bob's memorial service. Norma, please know you and your family will be very much in my thoughts.

Dearest Norma, Ginny, John and Rob and family members,

I felt so sad to hear of Mr. B's passing. A light has gone out in our world and will grace the heavens as another star in our night sky and an angel to be each one of us.

Bob was a loving and generous person - someone who always had a smile, a hug, something wise and usually funny to give. I loved listening to his stories and puns, and always marvelled at his ability to see the positive in every part of life. Your family and ours spent many years together travelling, skiing, and making wonderful memories. He was a really good friend to my Dad and their stories always made me laugh. I valued his wisdom, his life attitude and his ability to make people feel special just being who they were. He was my valued and treasured friend.

I am planning to fly in for the service on Monday and to be with you as you celebrate an exceptional human being who has made a huge difference in many lives, including mine.

I will miss not seeing Bob and hearing his laugh when I visit Calgary. I look forward to being with you all at this sad time, celebrating a life well lived. Mr. B will not be forgotten, and I know the love he has given so freely will come back to hold and comfort those of us who loved him.

My prayers and love are with you all.

My condolences to the entire family. I loved Bob's always gentle and kind ways, his vast knowledge and experience and his wonderful sense of humour. Norma, a great big hug from me. Wish I could be there.

To all the Bannerman Family members, from Glenn Summers and my family. All the words written could not express the feeling for Mr. B that I have. He was the father that I never had and was always there to talk to and extend advise. It meant so much when he attended the Tom Baker center 3 years ago when Eelbren Passed. He held the hearts of so many and I cherish the Memories I have of all the family outings and Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners. He will be dearly missed. Glenn Summers
