Robert Barnes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2025.
Robert "Bob" Barnes, age 74, of Oswego, NY passed away unexpectedly in his home on February 24, 2025. Bob was born May 15, 1950 to the late Shirley and Alfred Barnes.

A loving husband, father & papa, Bob is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; his daughters Jen (Rocky) Baker, Emily (Bradley) Mullen, Amy (David) Jermyn, and his granddaughters Mercedes (Alex Haessig) Whiteside, Haley (Kristina) Baker, Dominique (Ryan) McGhee, Victoria Conzone & Shelby (Matt) Trudeau and 4 great-grandchildren, Hailey, Caleb, Tony & Nevaehh. He is also survived by his siblings Timothy (Diane) Barnes, Roger (Eleanor) Barnes, Sara (Mike) Barnes, Charlie Barnes, Alfred Barnes, Lynette (Bill) Hutchinson, Tom Mcinstry, Sandra Langer & Gloria Nicholas, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Gale Sawyer and life-long best friend Dane Conley.

At the age of 17, Bob fearlessly enlisted in the United States Army. After spending a year in Korea, Bob went on to fulfill multiple duties ranging from heavy equipment operation, educator and military police before transferring to the Army Reserves until 1976. In 1971, Bob continued to serve and protect when he joined the Oswego City Police Department as a patrolman until he retired as a Lieutenant Investigator in 1989. He spent many days of his retirement enjoying a peaceful fire at any campground.

Those who knew Bob could often find him socializing and, if lucky enough, singing karaoke at the local American Legion, Hibernians, VFW, Moose Club or Elks Lodge. Bob was known to be the life of any party, a great friend to many, full of conversation (some bad jokes), and willing to help anyone. Most importantly, Bob was a pillar of honor to his family and friends.

Please consider joining the family for a celebration of life on July 12, 2025 at the American Legion Post 268 in Oswego, NY at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Legion Post 268, Oswego, New York.

When I joined the family in 1973 as a young bride, visiting Ma Waldau in her apt on West Seneca Street in Janet's house I can still to this day hear the jingle jangle of his police gear on his belt walking up the stairs for lunch with us. He always had a smile and positive word every single time. This photo is from a picnic last summer at my place in central Florida. What a beautiful day. What a beautiful life you had with him dear Joyce. We love you.
