Waynesville, Robert Allen Barris, age 75, died on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at his residence. A native of Wayne County, Michigan, he was the son of the late Manuel and Alice Zaff Barris. An icon in the world of music, orchestras and bassoonists; Bob was a well-loved professor, mentor, performer, friend and colleague. With a stunning career that spanned 55 years, he never tired of the stories, music, or relationships. He reveled in his family and friends and music. Bob is survived by his wife of 29 year, Joan Heller Barris; a daughter, Rachel E. Heller; a son, Eric Heller, and his wife, Lindsey Elman; a sister, Marcia Haber and a grandson, Zachary Heller. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2017 at Wells Events & Reception Center with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, Bob's family is asking for contributions to be made to a charity of choice.

JOAN, I just heard the news and am sending you big hugs. So sorry for your loss. My mom I know would be sending you hugs too.

I didn't know Mr Barris well, but I was an oboe student at DePaul when the oboes and bassoons shared a studio. I will always remember the way he treated us of us with kindness, and I will always remember the really intense light-up magnifying glass headgear he kept in the desk drawer for working on reeds :)
