Robert Kenneth Barton Sr.

Robert Kenneth Barton, Sr. age 72, of Dunwoody, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013.Ken was born in Rome, Georgia on June 7, 1940 to the late Edgar Louis Barton and Gaynelle Sharp Barton.  He was also preceded in the death by two brothers Ruben and Donald Barton and one sister Glenda Sue Barton Swan. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Carol Trammell Barton, daughter Elizabeth Bryce Barton Scales and son-in-law Gregory Joseph Scales of Asheville, North Carolina; son Robert Kenneth Barton Jr. and daughter-in-law Dennisse Barton of Peachtree City;  along with two grandchildren, Bianca Michelle Ramos and Christopher Ramos.Ken graduated from Model High School Rome, Georgia and the Georgia Institute of Technology, 1963. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity and served in the US Army National Guard Reserve.Mr. Barton worked 16 years for Trend Carpet Division of Champion International/Rome, Georgia serving in several management positions. He also served as Director of Finance, Trend International/Brussels, Belgium for 3 years.Mr. Barton moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1982 and began another 20 year career with the Simmons Company. He was hired as Director of Dealer Financial Services and in the years to follow served as Vice President Dealer Financial Services; Vice President-Administration, Vice President of Human Resources and when he retired was serving as Executive Vice President of Human Resources.Mr. Barton has served on the board of The International Steel Workers Pension Fund and was presently serving as Secretary-Treasurer on the board of The International Furniture Workers Pension Fund.He was an active member and Elder of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, The Men’s Bible Study Group, The Dunwoody Country Club and Trillium Links and Golf Club, Cashiers, North Carolina.Ken loved his Lord, his church, family and friends. He loved golf and was always happy on the golf course (good golf or not). He enjoyed work, reading, studying and spending time in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 31, at 11 o’clock in the morning at St Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 1938 Mount Vernon Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30338. Following the service, all are invited to a reception and celebration of Ken’s life at the Dunwoody Country Club.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ken’s name  to St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church or the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc.C/O  the Georgia Institute of Technology Alumni Association, 190 North Ave., N.W. Atlanta, GA 30313.
