Robert Bishop Obituary

Obituary:

Robert Lee Bishop, 83, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, set sail on February 20, 2024. Born on July 12, 1939, in Staunton, Virginia, in the same bed his Mother was born in, Bob was a man of few words and many adventures.

Bob's only child, Brenda, was his whole life. He never got over losing her, and Joan.

Bob served with honor in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer on the USS Sam Houston. Bob was hand picked to go to Nuclear Submarine school. Following his military service, Bob continued his career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where his expertise and leadership in staging were highly regarded.

Bob was a Freemason, and a Shriner. Bob was quiet about his service to the community. Bob often said "I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life…" before giving you some of the best advice you have ever gotten. Bob was also an amazing storyteller. From running with the bulls in Rota, Spain, to watching the glittering light of the full moon on the Med, or making the trips to Holy Loch, Scotland, Bob saw so much of the world in the Silent Service.

He is survived by his sisters, Lavinda Curl ( Tuck,) and Anita Mathews, and nieces Jimi Taylor, Erin Wright, in addition to his extended family in West Point Kentucky and Staunton, Virginia.

Bob was preceded in death by his dear daughter, Brenda Lee Bishop, and Brenda's Mother, Joan Marie Bishop.
Bob was also preceded by his Mother, Maryanne Taylor, father, Harry Bishop, step-father, English Collins Taylor, his brother, English Brent Taylor , and a baby sister, Nancy Marie Bishop.

A Graveside Service will be held on March 1 at 10:00 AM at Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth, NH. The Farrell Funeral Home in Portsmouth is assisting with the arrangements.

Bob's legacy of service and kindness will forever be remembered by those who knew him. He was the kind of neighbor who would keep an eye out for you, slip your good dog a milk bone dog biscuit through the fence, and share his prized rhubarb. He had plans for a garden this Summer, and never stopped missing his beloved Joan and Brenda.

Dear family and friends of Bob,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Bob´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor in the U.S. Submarine Force including the USS Sam Houston SSBN-609.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

National Chaplain, USSVI.

Master Chief Bishop enlisted me into the Navy in 1973.
Years later I met him again, in an AARP 55 Alive Driver Training Course.
Fair winds and following sea shipmate we have the watch.
