Robert "Bob" Boerner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 13, 2015.
Robert "Bob" James Boerner, Sr., 89, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2015, in Shavano Park, in the loving presence of his family. Born March 1, 1926, to Helen Marie Hull and Joseph Victor Boerner, Sr., Bob was a life-long resident of San Antonio, Texas, graduating from St. Cecilia's Grade School, Brackenridge High School, and St. Mary's University. During WWII he served in the Navy for two years, then returned to St. Mary's University and completed his degree in Accounting in 1949. In 1946, Bob became reacquainted with Alene Bull, a former classmate at St. Cecilia's Grade School. They began dating in September of 1947 and were married on May 31, 1948 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in San Antonio. With his wife Alene at home taking care of their nine children, Bob often worked more than one job to provide for his family. For years he would do bookkeeping work and prepare tax returns on nights and weekends. He had a successful career in accounting and finance, with some of his favorite positions at the Express News, KONO Radio, Hemisfair, and Sigmor Corporation. Later in life he found his greatest career success as an independent investment advisor. This success afforded Bob and Alene the ability to travel, which they truly loved, especially when it was with their family and friends. Bob cherished his role as a provider, whether it was for his family or for the charities that were special to him. He was a strong proponent of Catholic education and worked for years in support of Catholic schools in San Antonio by serving on boards of directors or fundraising. His efforts earned recognition by the Archdiocese of San Antonio, who in 2001 inducted Bob into its Education Hall of Fame as an outstanding leader in Catholic education. Bob was also honored by St. Mary's University in 2003 with the George B. Kohnen Leadership Award. Bob spent countless hours as a volunteer at his parishes and for many organizations including the Serra Club, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the International Order of the Alhambra. Bob was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church; previously he and Alene were founding members of both St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and St. Matthew Catholic Church. Through their involvement in their Catholic churches and schools, Bob and Alene counted many priests and nuns as their closest friends. Bob will be remembered for his generosity and his great sense of humor. He was truly someone who never met a stranger and enjoyed making others laugh. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 66 years, Alene Marie Bull Boerner; son, August Paul Boerner; sister, Kathleen M. Brady; and brother, Joseph V. Boerner, Jr. Bob is survived by his children: Jim Boerner of Tucson, AZ, Kathy Fandel and husband Tim of San Antonio, Peggy Miller and husband Alvin of Austin, Larry Boerner and wife Cheryl of Tahoe Vista, CA, Cindy Isaacson and husband Alan of Austin, Patti Boerner, and Ed Boerner of San Antonio, Jerry Boerner and wife Jeannette of Alpharetta, GA; twelve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 15, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the Rosary to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Avenue. MASS OF THE RESURRECTION FRIDAY OCTOBER 16, 2015 10:00 A.M. HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH 20523 HUEBNER ROAD With Reception to Follow Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Presentation Sisters, 8931 Callaghan Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78230.

No matter the number of children they were raising, their arms were wide open to others that wanted to hang out or sleep over. Amazing people !

The Boerner family is in a class by itself....a lot of bodies to nourish, minds to educate and morals to nurture....seemed so effortless to us...their secret weapon was their deep faith. Rest in peace! Bill, Tom and Ann Barley.
