Robert "Bob" Estes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 28, 2024.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Alan Estes on May 19, 2024. Left to cherish his life well-lived are his wife, Angela; sisters Cheryl (Robert) Thomson, Gail (Jim) Lessin; mother-in-law Rita McDaniell; step-daughter Rachel Dail; grandson Kieran; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Born on July 9, 1952, in Charleston, S.C., Bob moved to Cary, N.C., as a child where he lived until moving to Apex in 2019. He attended NC State University where he served as managing editor of the Technician student newspaper in 1973-74. Bob led a fruitful career in cleanroom certification where he spent time working abroad in Ireland, Scotland and many locations stateside; taking every opportunity to explore the place he was in, finding waterfalls and mountains to be a favorite.

The essence of Bob's life was to give kindness through charity. He met his wife, Angi, while cycling for BikeMS, he also enjoyed volunteering for local charity bike rides and enjoyed his final bike ride supporting the American Lung Association. In retirement, Bob valued being a dedicated volunteer for the Western Wake food pantry.

Bob had a gentle spirit, was kind, smart and was always an adventurer. In his early years, he loved hang gliding, frisbee golf and spent time hiking with his dad out west. He had a love for cycling with friends and exploring canal and rail trails on his bicycle, traveling to many unique places in the U.S. Bob also enjoyed morning coffee, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, board games, reading, gardening and bird watching. He was a lifelong NC State Wolfpacker. Bob was devoted to his wife and deeply loved his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bob was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, Barbara and Robert Estes; former wife Mary Catherine; special friend and son-in-law Greg Dail.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held later this fall. In lieu of flowers, please consider celebrating Bob through a donation to the The National Multiple Sclerosis Society or Western Wake Crisis Ministry food pantry.

Angie, We are so sorry for your loss. Such a perfect weekend until the end. All of our hearts were heavy that evening -- and you and Bob have been in our thoughts. Bob loaned me the dollar for the Coke at the hotel when I didn't have any cash. You two --such a sweet couple - and doing what you both loved.
Our sympathies, Rick & Karen Pence

My deepest condolence to the Estes Family. I had the highest respect for Bob and his willingness to help and teach others about cleanroom certification, contamination control, World history or just good counsel on life. We played a lot golf in Arizona and New Mexico back in 2007. And had the privilege of working for and beside Bob in our industry. It was a blessing to have even known Bob Estes. Prayers for peace and comfort to the Estes Family.

Angi, so sorry to hear of the loss of Bob. I remember as you started this retirement adventure with Bob, and how excited you were to start! I have watched all the great times exploring new places with him and other friends! While it is hard right now, embrace all those great times and reflect on the blessing of the time you had together. I'm here if you ever need to chat. Thoughts and prayers go out to you and family!

Bob´s smile was warm and genuine. When he smiled he was all in. When he met you it was as if you were already friends.
We only first met Bob and Angie on a 400 mile bike ride just a couple years ago. But it seems like we knew them forever.
Watching Bob and Angie was like watching childhood sweethearts. They had that magic where they could communicate with a glance or body language. There are many folks who have been together decades that would envy their love and comfort with each other. It´s hard to imagine their 5 glorious years together when it seems like a lifetime of love.
I love the pictures of Bob and Angie.
I am so grateful to have you in our lives.
BillytheKid & Paula and our beautiful boy who was also your friend.

Known for his exceptional brilliance and intuition, Bob Estes had a unique wit and a soft-spoken nature that endeared him to everyone. Working with Bob was a pleasure as he was someone you could always count on to get the job done with integrity, accuracy, and efficiency. If there was a problem, he solved it. A trailblazer and an innovator, Bob didn´t just come up with solutions - in many cases he invented them. When there were obstacles, he methodically cleared them or otherwise found ways to get around them.

Even though most of my association with Bob was on a professional level, it was easy to see that he was a devoted husband and family man. It was and is a privilege to call Bob Estes a friend. I take comfort in knowing that Heaven is now home to this truly amazing man.
