Robert Brending Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2012.
Brending, Robert 'Bob' 85 Jan. 10, 1927 Jan. 17, 2012 We are sad to announce the passing of Bob Brending, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend on Jan. 17, 2012. He had just celebrated his 85th birthday. Bob was born in Devils Lake, N.D. to Paul and Marcella Brending. After spending his early childhood in North Dakota, the family lived briefly in Prosser, Was. They moved to Jennings Lodge before Bob's senior year of high school. Upon graduation from West Linn High School, Bob enlisted in the Army and served for approximately two years. After receiving his honorable discharge, Bob returned home to start his college education at Lewis Clark College. On June 8, 1947, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Baars. They had two children, Cathie and Mark and were married for 64 years. During his time at Lewis Clark, Bob played football, made some wonderful lifelong friends, and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Education. He began his teaching career in the West Linn School district where he initially taught and coached at the high school. Bob went on to get his administrative certificate, and became principal at Wilsonville and Stafford Grade Schools. He later went on to Sunset Grade School, Bolton Grade School, and completed his career at the new Stafford Elementary School retiring in 1984. Bob enjoyed fishing, golfing, boating, waterskiing, and traveling. Being an avid sportsman, Bob enjoyed slalom skiing into his 70's and golfing into his 80's. After Bob's retirement, he and Dorothy enjoyed extensive travel. Bob was a founding member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Gladstone and held many volunteer positions in the church over the years. He also spent many volunteer hours in the Lions Club in Gladstone and Canby. Bob passed away peacefully on Jan. 17, 2012 at his home in Canby. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Mark and his wife, Linda; daughter, Cathie Sorensen; grandchildren, Traci Thompson, Melissa and Megan Sorensen, Michelle and Amy Brending; and great-grandson, Brayden Russell. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Stephen Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund in Bob's name or Providence Hospice, 6410 NE Halsey St., Suite 300, Portland, OR 97213. Services will be held Saturday, Feb 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 290 W. Gloucester St., Gladstone. Arrangements by Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud.

Bob served as my role model and mentor my first year of teaching in 1957 at Bolton. I valued his advice both in the classroom and as a sports coach. He was a great teacher and friend.

Dorthy am so sorry for your loss. Bob was a special person as you know. My wife Betty and I enjoyed the few times we met at the West Linn H.S. reunions.
I was class of 1944 but left school in '43 for the Merchant Marines.
Please know that we are thinking of you and our prayers are with you and the family.

Mr Brending was one the best teachers and principal we had at Wilsonville Grade School, he was also a good friend of my father and our family. He was also a pretty good fisherman too. My thoughts are with his family.

Mr. Brending was such a calm presence in the Wilsonville Grade School. My mother, Alice Aden was his secretary and her favorite principal! I am sorry for your loss.
