Robert Brooks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 24, 2024.
Tucson - Dr. Robert J. Brooks passed away on July 22, 2024, embraced by his family and the serene desert mountains that brought him deep peace. Born on June 4, 1952, in Pittsburgh, PA, Bob's childhood was marked by curiosity, adventure, and a precocious spirit. A proud Eagle Scout, he often shared the tale of bravely spending a night alone in the wilderness as a young boy.

In 1967, Bob's family relocated to Scottsdale, AZ, where he attended Saguaro High School and served as president of the German Club. He worked part-time at his mother's health food store and spent weekends horseback riding and reading the Merck Manual. On August 5, 1969, a fateful encounter changed his life forever when he met his future bride, Ellen Stromberg. They married in Los Angeles on August 20, 1972, and began building a life together full of purpose, boundless love, and shared dreams.

Bob pursued higher education at Loyola Marymount for his undergraduate studies and at the University of Arizona for medical school. He completed his internship at the University of Michigan and returned to Tucson for his residency and fellowship. Driven by a profound desire to help others, Bob specialized in oncology, a challenging field that benefitted from his compassionate touch. He was a kind and humane doctor, deeply caring for his patients and staff and profoundly impacting the lives of thousands. Beyond his practice, Bob co-founded Life Beyond Cancer, a scholarship-based annual retreat for women nationwide living with breast cancer. A lifelong Beatles fan, Bob even had a real-life beetle named after him, courtesy of a grateful patient who was also an entomologist.

Bob's unwavering dedication to his family was the cornerstone of his life. His unconditional love for Ellen and his three daughters, Emily Hall, Kristi Pennington, and Sara Fisher, was unparalleled. He was the world's best husband, dad, and "Bappo" to his four granddaughters and two grandsons, whom he so dearly loved.

Bob exuded positivity and generosity, inspiring everyone to live life to the fullest. He cherished the sanctity of time and embodied servant leadership. Active in his community and church, St. Philips in the Hills, Bob always aimed to leave the world better than he found it.

Bob is preceded in death by his mother, Electra Brooks, his father, Don Brooks, and his beloved dog, Bacchus. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Brooks, his three daughters, six grandchildren, three sons-in-law, and his sister, Val Brooks-Kennedy.

A memorial service honoring the extraordinary life of Bob Brooks will be held on September 19th at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church.

I just learned today about his death and I´m so sad. Dr. Brooks was my Oncologist and I was so lucky to have him. He made my cancer journey as pleasant as possible. It´s been 20 years since my diagnosis and I feel so fortunate to be alive and still think of him so fondly. What a gift he was to his patients. Sending love to his family who must miss him terribly. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you, Ellen and all of your family. We have been friends for many years and have always enjoyed time spent together. You and Bob made us realize the love for golden doodles as well. It is sad to know that Bacchus passed as I know what he meant to Bob. We will miss Bob and the kindness he brought to us and all who were blessed to have known him. God bless you Ellen and your "whole lotta ladies" and their families.

My deepest condolences to the family. Dr Brooks treated my mother for metastatic breast cancer. She told me after her first appointment she really liked him as did I. He didnt get to treat her long before she passed. I called his office a short time later requesting her bill. A few days later I was called and told " there was no bill" I have never forgot that generous act of kindness, May Dr. Brooks rest in eternal peace.

I met Bob first during planning for the first (and subsequently all 10) Womens' Cancer Survivor retreats held at the glorious Miraval spa near Tucson. He gave such inspiration to our retreat guests and to those of us who were fortunate enough to be "faculty" for these events.

I want to share my deepest condolences with the entire family. Although I never had the privilege to meet Robert, I´m lucky to be friends with his amazing daughter, Sara.

Many people strive to leave a lasting legacy, and I just wanted to remind the family that Robert truly nailed it. His work in oncology, being a comforting voice for families during their toughest moments, and helping people beat cancer is arguably one of the most nobel thing a human can do.

But even more, he passed on his wisdom, love, and care to his children, making them into the wonderful people they are today. They continue to spread his compassion, kindness, and friendliness to everyone they meet. Robert, you did it-you left a legacy that will live on for generations and I am inspired by your story and the impact you made

I am so sorry for your family's loss. I was patient of Dr. Brooks in 1985 faced with a cancer diagnosis; single mom with 3 young children to raise. Confused and scared doesn't begin to describe my situation. After several appointments with him he took me aside and said "you have 3 young children who need you to be there for them; if you were my wife I would be telling you the same thing. You must do what your doctors are telling you what to do!" I was so scared because of my cancer diagnosis. Dr. Books told me he would always be there for me and he was. I am alive today with 3 grown children and 6 grandkids because of his wisdom and compassion. I so regret not going back to him as a survivor to let him know that he essentially saved my family! He was such a wonderful human being! With gratitude and love. Joan Money, formerly Joan Fitzgerald

Dear Ellen, Emily, Kristi, and Sara: I am so sorry to hear that Bob has passed away. My heart is aching for all of you. I will never forget how kind, compassionate & generous your dad/husband (my cousin) was with his time, when I received my breast cancer diagnosis. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to meet both Ellen and Bob in 2019. I will never forget the time I got to spend with you both in London. You have been in my thoughts so much over the past few months. Please know that I am here for you, in whatever way I can be. Sending you all my sincerest condolences for the loss of a very special man-and my very special cousin...Dr. Bob Brooks. xxxx

I may not be here without Doctor Brooks and his partner, Linda Morse. 23 years ago, Dr. Brooks treated my cancer and made sure a 22 year old feel listened to and taken care of. I am so grateful he chose to pursue oncology.

Bob was an extraordinary man. I met him many years ago as my doctor and he was kind, caring, incredibly knowledgable and made a difficult time much less frightening. May his memory be a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know him.

I was a patient who experienced his compassionate care, and when insurance looked dodgy he offered to treat me without cost - who does that? The world was a better place because of him. Condolences to the family.
