Robert Brule Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 25, 2004.
BRULE, ROBERT J., 63, formerly of Waterford, CT. passed away on March 22, 2004 at his home in Irving TX. Bob was born and raised in Newington, CT., where in high school he was an accomplished baseball player and talented musician. He was then awarded a scholarship to attend the Hartt College of Music. Following Hartt, he auditioned for and was accepted into the United States Coast Guard Band, based in New London. After serving twelve years as a trumpet player in the USCG Band, Bob was honored with an appointment as Director of Cadet Bands at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. During his tenure there, he founded the Windjammer's Invitational Marching Band Competition, now in its 23rd year of operation. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in International Marketing from the University of Connecticut. In 1978, he founded the Noank & Mystic Community Band, serving as Director until 1985, when he retired from the Coast Guard with 24 years of service. Shortly thereafter, he relocated to Irving, TX., pursuing employment in the private music sector. Bob and his wife Donna (formerly of Somerset, PA.) were married in Irving on March 17, 1988. Bob became the Director of the Irving Symphonic Band in 1990 and served in this capacity until December of 2003, at which time he was appointed Director Emeritus. Following a longtime dream, Bob founded Cimarron Music and Productions in 1993, nurturing and expanding it into a thriving sole proprietorship and operated it until his death. Bob is survived by his loving wife Donna Brule, his children; Allison Giebelhaus of Brea, CA., Tracy Brule of North Windham, CT., Robert Brule of Waterford, CT. and Jeffrey Brule of North Charlestown, SC.; grandchildren, Janie Lynn Giebelhaus and Anne Marie Giebelhaus of Brea, CA., Hannah Brule of North Windham, CT. and Jeffrey and Jason Brule of North Charleston, SC.; brothers, Eugene Brule of Bristol, CT. and Martin Brule. For many years right up until his death, Bob and I worked together in the publication of music composed by Ambassador (and former Secretary of the Navy) J. William Middendorf II. Bob and I spoke often on the phone, and we would meet face-to-face now and then in Washington, DC where the original scores and parts were archived. On several occasions, Bob was with the Ambassador at the annual dinner of the Order of the Carabao, in the District. Bob was an unfailingly gracious man, always patient with my ignorance of music when I had difficulty in finding what he needed. I never met a kinder or more forthcoming man than Bob. He was a pleasure to work with. I shall miss him very much as a colleague and as a friend. He is in my thoughts and in my prayers.

At Irving Community Television, We taped and aired many of the Symphonic Bands concerts. Roberts' love of music and enthusiasm for conducting was contagious, and enjoyable to watch. He'll be missed.

I played trombone for Bob when the band was still called the Irving Community Concert Band. I admired his direction. He definitely knew what he wanted and how to get it. I had the good fortune to have lunch with Bob a couple of months ago to discuss collaboration between his group and the Irving Chorale, and he was open to many of my suggestions. He left a lasting impression on my musical career.

The world has lost a good musician and a good man. I have lost a friend. I thank God for allowing me to know Bob. He will be missed.

The bugle has called,

its echo faded away.

The music's been played,

and the audience gone.

The lights are turned off,

the doors have been locked,

yet something is there

that reminds us all.

The baton yet waves

with the thought of your hand.

The music yet plays

and echos your plan.

Your memory lasts

with every note we play,

Your spirit alive

in the band you made.

No matter who stands

at the front of the stage,

No matter who waves

the baton in his hand,

That proud, happy man

with a march in his heart

will always be there

at the top of our chart.

Thank you for many years of joy. May you play with the heavenly trumpets forever.
