Robert Buchanan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2024.
Robert "Bob" Brooks Buchanan, 95, of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away on April 28, 2024. He was born on November 18, 1928. Bob spent his early years growing up in Baltimore, Ohio. At 13, Bob remembers selling newspapers on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. Later he moved with his mother, Marjorie K. Buchanan to Lancaster, where he graduated from Lancaster High School. Bob attended Baldwin Wallace College where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity and the BW Wrestling Team. Bob's early jobs ranged from delivering furniture, working at a dairy farm, fishing camps, digging trenches, working construction, and a soda jerk at Baldwin Wallace. He often recalled his days of hitchhiking to Canada, Oregon, and Canada with his high school friends. One of his favorite stories was being deported from Canada for not having a Work Permit.
In 1948, Bob met the love of his life, Marjorie Lou Myers at the Crystal Ballroom at Buckeye Lake. They were married for 62 years until Marjorie Lou passed on to God's Glory in 2011. Bob expressed that he was most proud that he had enough sense to marry her. They never lost their love of dancing, family, and passion for Buchanan's Furniture and Interiors Store.

In 1949, Bob joined his mother, Marjorie K. Buchanan, as a partner at Buchanan's Furniture and Interiors. His dedication and leadership helped transform the business into a premier furniture destination in Ohio. Recognized for his outstanding contributions, Bob was named the Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce in 1955. Throughout his career, Bob's integrity, selfless service, leadership, and positive attitude earned him the Distinguished Service Award. All traits that Bob continued to display throughout his life.

Bob was deeply involved in his community, particularly through his long-standing commitment to the Rotary Club of Lancaster. He served as President and held various leadership positions within the club and was a dedicated member for 66 years, achieving perfect attendance-an unparalleled feat in Ohio. Additionally, Bob served as the Chairman of the American Red Cross Bloodmobile program.

A faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, Ohio, Bob served as a Trustee and Usher as well as on many committees supporting the church. He was known for his love of golf and playing cards, often competing at the Lancaster Country Club and winning the annual Calcutta Golf Tournament multiple times with his wife, Marjorie. Bob had three Hole In Ones in his life but was most proud of how many balls he was able to find on the course..."There are no lost balls." His golfing was legendary with his grandchildren and great grandchildren so much so that he was called "Golfpa". He was a passionate Ohio State Buckeyes fan and enjoyed following all their teams. In his later years, he took pleasure in meticulously mowing his beautiful grounds. From Bob's first dog, Pudgie to his last sweet, Mia, he was a lover of dogs...countless dogs. We believe that they are surrounding him now in Heaven

Bob is survived by his daughters, Beth Anne Hoch (John), Tolli B. Gossett (Bob), Chris Buchanan Dalton (Scott), son Rod J. Buchanan (Ann), grandchildren: Erynne Hamilton (Rob), Robert Gossett (Sarah), John Hoch, Brett Buchanan (Laura), Meghan Talmage, Brooke Wellstead (Michael), Stuart Dalton (Kate), Caroline Filacchione (Tyler), and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marjorie Lou Buchanan, mother, Marjorie K. Buchanan, and father, Russell K. Buchanan.

The Buchanan Family is especially grateful for the entire Primrose Retirement Staff and his physical therapist, Scott, who were so loving to Bob and became a part of the family. Special thanks for his friendship with the Buckeye Table of Butch, Bob, Bob and Darrell. We are grateful for Sue Barber, who was a loving presence in his later life. A heart filled thank you to FairHope Hospice who provided comfort and peace.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 8th at 2:30 followed by Visitation in the Parlor at The First United Methodist Church, 163 East Wheeling Street, Lancaster, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Rotary Club of Lancaster and the First United Methodist Church of Lancaster.

When my husband Carl and I were first married we made a trip to Buchanan's Furniture Store to purchase furniture for our home. There we met Marjorie (Mom) and Bob and learned what "good furniture" was. Through the years we also met "young Marjorie" who was always cheerful and smiling. Through the years Marjorie, Bob and Marjorie became our social friends as well as fellow business owners. Later Rob added value to the furniture store with his excellent crafted furniture. Our home is filled with the "quality" furniture from Buchanan's today. Quality furniture sold by a truly "quality" man and his Quality Family!
