BURGESS _ Robert Frederick (Bob), of "South Bowser", born October 26, 1930 in Vancouver, BC, passed peacefully away at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on April 12, 2003. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, his father William and mother Alma. He will be lovingly missed by Bea Fraipont of Qualicum Beach, and Cailaig, his four-legged friend. As well, Bob leaves his twin brother Bill, wife Margot, their sons Alan, Dennis and families, brother and sister-in-law Larry and Ann Cooper, Pat, Sarah and their husbands; cousins Arlene and John Sych, Jeff, Brenda and Leanne; Ted and Jean Larson, Rick and Rod; Dick and Joy Hibbard; and Shirley and Jim Kolezar. Bob's family and many friends will miss his wonderful sense of humour, which sustained him through his final days. Bob was a renowned sailor who raced successfully for over thirty years, including winning the Dragon Class World Championship in 1983. He achieved status as an International Racing Judge, and was awarded the Athlete of the Month from the Canadian Sports Association in July of 1973. The family would like to thank the staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for their compassionate care during Bob's illness. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at St. Stephen's United Church, Qualicum Beach, on Saturday, April 19th at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the "Robert and Joan Burgess Endowment" of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of choice. There will also be a scattering of the ashes at Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on Friday, May 16, 2003, at noon, with a reception to follow.
