He returned to Utah in 1966 and went into the private practice of Ophthalmology from 1966 - 1990. Bob's service to his patients was exceeded only by his compassion and generosity. He served as Director for the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness from 1968 - 1974. He was a certified Scuba Diver and had enjoyed diving in places such as Truk- Roatan, Honduras - The Cayman Islands - Bonaire and Belize. Some of his most memorable and enjoyable experiences were flying with his best friend Dr. Orson White. Bob had a single engine Bonanza - 8888 Alpha - and Orson had a twin engine, the two of them would fly to medical conventions and anywhere else that they could find a legitimate reason to go. They always flew in a flight of two with Orson above. To the Bob Despain Family:

I was planning to attend Bob's 'Celebration of Life' at the Little America Hotel' on 5-12-08. But unfortunately I was not able to attend. I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to the Despain Family for their loss of Bob. I knew Bob both as a patient and as one of our medical consultants (ophthalmologist), when I worked for the Social Security Disability Determination Services in SLC. Bob was a great guy and a real professional. I had a great deal of respect for him as my own Personal Physican as well as a collegue. He was a great guy and a considered him a personal friend. Bob always went the extra mile both as our medical consultant and my own doctor. I send all my best wishes sympathies, condolences, and regards to the family. Sincerely, Dennis Chamberlain

Dear Family, Bob was a close friend for two years at Weber College and a great Phoenix buddy. I remember so well as he taught me how to say the name of the Church in German as he prepared to go to Switzerland and I to Sweden. We have hardly crossed paths since although we covered mutual territory in Egypt, Honduras, D.C. and humanitarian work. I have kept informed of his dedicated and illustrious career over the years through mutual friends.

With our 17 years overseas and mostly Washigton D.C. based residence we were out of contact with each other, but I had planned to look him up this summer as we are finally back in the U.S. to stay. Sorry to have waited. That is a hard lesson at our age. He was far to young to go---but he did so much good over the many years he had. Our deepest condolences over the separation from a great and good man.

Eric and Family -

How sad to read of this news! Although begun as a professional relationship, Bob had become a warm addition to our family over the years of care to all of our members in a manner of remarkable thoughtfulness and kindness. We remember him as a thorough professional, a thorough gentleman, a rare kind of friend.

Our deepest condolences to you and family, Eric. We have another commitment tonight, but we will make every effort to juggle and attend the gathering in his memory.

Our very best,

Rich, Elaine, and Family

Dear Despain Family,

The world is a better place because of Dr. Despain. He was truly a remarkable man. My deceased husband was under his care for many years with Diabetic retinopathy. As he was losing his vision Dr. Despain took so many extra measures to help . First of all trying to save his vision, and last but not least always being there during our adjustment to the loss of vision. He truly showed insight and caring for those less fortunate. My children remember his soft spoken voice and calming demeanor during that difficult time in our lives. He will always hold a place in our hearts. May his love and beautiful spirit surround you always.

Dear Gwila, I was sorry to hear Dr Despain had passed away. He certantly was an accomplished man. You are so lucky to have shared his life.
My last eye exam was at the VA medical center here in Salt Lake City.Dr Hatch was overseeing the interns there. He wanted to look at my grafts. He was awe struck. Felt they are the most perfect, he has ever seen. He said 'its like devine providence".
I give you my sympathy and send you hug.
With Regards,
Joseph Abramo

Bob Despain's family
wow..what a shock to learn that Bob has passed on. We were close friends through Jr High and High School and Weber College as well. We skiied Snow Basin and all those things together. We left at the same time on our missions. Bob was our "Best Man" at our wedding (55yr ago.) This time was full of wonderful memories, which we will alway cherish. We have tried to stay in contact, but distance hasn't always made this possible. We were moved a few weeks ago, while in Sandy, to try to get up to see him..But we didn't.
We extend our love to Zwila and the kids. And Ann, who we haven't seen for a long time. Sorry we can't make it Monday.
Love Harold and Cleone Jones

May I express our family's condolences to Gwyla and Bob's entire family. Bob was kind, patient, gentle, understanding and generous. He was a true fiend to my father and to me for almost 30 years. He always inquired after the well being of members of our family. He will always be remembered fondly in our family. Out of respect, he was always referred to as Dr. Despain within our family and our company, although we all felt so close to him. I personally will always have great and close feelings for Bob and, as he would have it, for his family.

Dear Despain family,
Dr. Despain . . . a great man, an exceptional physician, a fine teacher, a real gentleman, and true friend to all. I have fond memories of the good Doctor in Fillmore . . . to include driving his VW "Bug" down the school sidewalk to the Millard High School Football Games. His zest for life enhanced the whole community . . . we loved him!! May the Lord be with you during this difficult time.
