Robert Gault III, 88, died on July 31, 2016 in Elgin, Texas. He had been a resident of Midland since 1977, moving here from Corpus Christi. He was born on September 14, 1927 in Agua Dulce, Texas to Ferris Skinner and Robert E. Gault. He was a graduate of Agua Dulce High School, and graduated from Texas A&M in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1953 and was a decorated combat veteran of the Korean War. After returning from Korea, he served as a company commander in the 3rd Armored Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

On April 4, 1953, he married the love of his life, Peggy Wheeler of Three Rivers, Texas. They enjoyed 53 great years together before Peggy's passing in January of 2007.

He was employed by Continental Oil Company (Conoco) in 1953 and worked for that company until his retirement in 1990. His work took him to production and exploration department locations in Eunice, Hobbs, and Artesia, New Mexico; Anchorage, Alaska and Corpus Christi and Midland, Texas. He was a production department division administrative manager at the time of his retirement.

He was also a member of the Midland Community Theater, the Midland/Odessa Symphony and Chorale and the Museum of the Southwest. He enjoyed reading, travelling, woodworking, yard work, hunting and target shooting, but most of all he enjoyed visits with family members and reunions of the Gault and Wheeler families.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy, and by his parents.

He is survived by his son Jim and Jim's wife, Melanie, of Elgin, Texas; his brother Jim of Westhoff, Texas plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He had named as his honorary pallbearers: Chuck Pickering of Victoria, Texas, Joe Pickering of New Braunfels, Texas, Jim Edwards, Bill Huebner, Dan Kowert, and James Hamilton all of Midland, Texas.

He was given great support and help in his final days by his daughter in law, Melanie Gault of Elgin, Texas, and from his nieces; Cheryl Wheeler of George West, Texas, Sandra Bitner of McAllen, Texas, Susan Krause of Houston, Texas, Nancy Callegari of Boerne, Texas and also from Mary Chaisson who was his caregiver in Midland.
