Robert Giancola Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Robert Dale Giancola, 72, passed away on Monday, May 19th, 2025, at the Minneapolis VA after his courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born January 26th, 1953, in Phoenix, Arizona to Joseph and Margaret (nee Porter) Giancola, Bob grew up to serve his country as a US Marine during the Vietnam era. After his service, he earned an associate's degree in Automotive Technology from the Los Angeles Community College. Bob went on to spend nearly two decades with BNSF Railroad, where he developed a reputation for dedication and hard work. An avid motorcyclist, Bob earned numerous "Iron Butt" patches, a testament to his adventurous spirit. Active in his community, Bob was deeply involved with The Alano Society of Minneapolis, serving as president from 2011-2016 and again from 2023 until 2025. He was married to his loving wife Michele and was the proud father of four children. Bob is survived by his sisters Rosemary Colamesta, Jeannette Wheeler, Nancy Kimsey, Alice Cupaiuol, brothers John and Joey; sons Andrew, Paul, Nicholas, Paul Aherns; and his many grandchildren. Preceded in death by his brother Sam, sister Kathy, mother Margaret, father Joseph, wife Michele, and his previous wife Patty Binder. Bob's legacy will live on through the many lives he touched with his toughness, compassion, and steadfast commitment to those around him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Alano Society of Minneapolis (paypal.me/alanominneapolis). Your contributions will help the '2218' continue their mission to provide resources and support for addiction recovery, a cause close to Bob's heart. Please reference "Bobby G" memorial in your donation. A Celebration of Life for Bob is planned for Saturday, July 19th from 2pm to 5pm at the Alano Society of Minneapolis All are welcome to attend and share stories and memories of Bob's life.

For 2 years I got to open the doors of 2218 with Bobby and share the journey of Recovery. There has been no greater honor then call him one of my best friends. Bobby taught me to be humble, patience, fair, and love unconditionally. He taught me to trust myself and always believed in me. Bobby was a very loyal and trusted friend. He was the definition of a man of character and humility. I will be forever grateful that I got to walk this journey with him. I am a better person because of him. Bobby.... May your spirit and light continue shine unto us. God Speed. Darin

Bobby G! the heart and soul of my home group Sq 15; countless times you were a confidant in my early sobriety and 35 years later you are one on my Rushmore. Solomon

Bobby, I feel so honored and blessed that you were in my life, all thanks to my BFF! I remember when the two of you fell in love. So very remarkable and beautiful was your journey. Bobby, I hope you are dancing and whooping up a storm with your fabulous bride. Even though you weren´t feeling well, I´m so happy that we recently got to spend some time together. I love you two always and forever and know that you and M´Belle are never far from my thoughts!!

Thank you for treating me like your own son Bobby. Not only did you make me laugh, you taught me (I´m sure a lot of nicks other friends) how to be strong and you led by example, teaching us what hard work really is and what it looks like.

I met Bobby G at 2218 in 1987. He told me something that worked "If I can do it, anyone can do it!" I took it to heart and I'm here today. I never wanted to let him down. I'm happy I was able to tell him how much he meant to me before he left us.

Bobby was a quiet but great guy. It was fun to spend time with Bobby and Michele in Florida. This photo was from March of 2020 when Patrick Levi and I spent the day with them in St. Augustine. Both will remain in my heart.

I met Bobby when I joined in Squad 15 in 1991. Probably the toughest guy I ever met. The stories of his younger, wilder days would make my hair stand on end! So wonderful to see that same person become one of the kindest, devoted and hardworking leaders that made 2218 such a special place. I will miss him. RiP Bobby.

You were a force to be reckoned with, and you had a heart of gold. Your kids and 2218 Alano were your driving forces. Can't believe you are gone. RIP Robert. You will never be forgotten.

With nearly 40 years of friendship there are way too many memories we are blessed with. Bobby you not only cheered for us and believed in us but you brought me my best friend. I know you´re dancing with Michele in heaven right now. She probably had your dance card fully planned for your arrival. I can just see her making you blush right now. You were a true force and you leave a huge legacy. Thank you friend for all you did. For all the adventures from Key West to California!! For all the talks. And for the texts these last few months. You will be missed.
