Born on March 11, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, Rob spent his childhood conducting experiments with (and perhaps sometimes on) his younger brothers, Kim and Bruce, in the basement of their home on Coyle Avenue. That same basement served as the venue for six decades of Passover seders, where Rob, his brothers, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and any number of extended family and friends gathered each year to read the Haggadah, sneak bits of brisket before dinnertime, and hope there was a good prize for whoever found the afikomen. This tradition carried on to the next generation, where Rob's own children and their cousins spent their formative Passover years in that same basement, wreaking much the same havoc.

Rob attended Oberlin College with Kim, much to the delight of the brothers and in no small part thanks to the benevolence of the college financial aid department. Rob was a member of the Oberlin swim team, and remained an avid swimmer even in his later years. He went on to obtain his PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Washington, where he met and fell in love with fellow graduate student, Nona Phillips. Rob and Nona built a life and home together in Seattle, before moving across the lake to Kirkland with their young children so that-at demand of the youngest-they could have room for a dog.

From the time of his company's founding in 1994, Rob spent his career designing and building medical devices at Lucent Medical Systems. The technology developed by Rob and his colleagues has been used in more than a million procedures and helped countless patients and healthcare providers across the country.

In his spare time, Rob was an avid foodie, admitted nerd, and talented musician. He loved to cook meals for others, spend time with Nona, friends, and family at their beach house, and go kayaking to see if any of the harbor seals might stop by for a friendly chat. He was an accomplished guitar player, took up violin just for fun in adulthood (the dog had mixed feelings about that one), and had a beautiful singing voice. He enjoyed reading, watching any number of science fiction television series, exploring math and physics questions with his son, and graciously reading his daughter's attempts at novel writing. Above all, he loved spending time with his wife and loved ones in the two beautiful homes they built together.

A much beloved husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, cousin, and friend, Rob is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nona Phillips; son Aaron Golden, daughter-in-law Rebecca Lee Golden, and granddaughter Kaiyah Golden; and daughter Shoshana Golden and son-in-law Michael Childers, Jr. Rob was predeceased by his father, Abraham Golden, and is survived by his mother, Lee Golden. Rob is additionally survived by his brothers and their families, Kim Golden, Jean Suda, Rebecca Eve Golden, Ryan Patterson, Jeremy Golden, and Daniel Golden; and Bruce Golden, Michelle Mercer, Zoe Mercer-Golden, Valentin Bolotnyy, Benjamin Mercer-Golden, and Victoria Wills.

Rob loved and cherished his friends, coworkers, and neighbors as family, and never knew a stranger. He was beloved by all who were lucky enough to know him and will be deeply missed.

My Favorite Cousin is an epitath that many would write. And it would likely be true for all of them. A real "mensch" in all aspects of the word's meaning. He is missed by all.

Rob was a good man, and we are deeply grateful that our family-and everyone at Qualitel-had the privilege of knowing him as both a friend and colleague for over 20 years. I FIRST met Rob on February 18, 2004, when he and Steve Vincent visited Qualitel. That date will always stay with us-it was also the day our daughter was born.

Rob´s groundbreaking invention, which used MAGNETS delivered through stents and catheters, has helped-and saved-MILLIONS of lives. I´ll always remember his stories, especially the one where he personally tested his device by threading a tube down his nose and into his stomach. That moment exemplified his courage and unwavering commitment to innovation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We wish them peace, comfort, and strength during this difficult time.

He will be truly missed.

With heartfelt sympathy,
Hai, Lisa, Sydney, Elliott, and the entire Qualitel team

Rob had a gift for making everyone feel at ease, and as though they were both treasured by and important to him. The world feels smaller and poorer without Rob in it.

It's with great sadness that Beth and I extend our deepest condolences to Rob's family, his brothers, Kim and Bruce, and their families. I met Kim during our freshman year at Oberlin, and through Kim, I eventually met Rob as well. I saw Rob at the fabulous seders celebrated in the basement of the Golden Chicago home. It's hard not to feel like family when you're around the Golden brothers, especially Rob.

After Rob and Nona settled in Seattle, they graciously had me stay at their home before I embarked on one of my outdoor adventures, rafting in British Columbia. When Rob saw how poorly a city kid from New York was equipped to survive two weeks on the river, he graciously lent me his best tent, which I immediately destroyed the first night I tried to pitch it. It was also during my maiden voyage to Seattle that Rob introduced me to the four great virtues of Seattle, which were then mostly unknown to those of us from the East.: Starbucks (well before it was a national chain), Dilettante Chocolate, Mount Rainier Cherries, and REI. Although this was many years ago, I still recall the exceptional warmth around Rob and Nona's table at their Kirkland home.

Years later, at our country home, it was only Rob who could use hand tools well enough that we could successfully assemble our first home kitchen island. These are all very small moments in Rob's life, but they exemplify the warmth, thoughtfulness, generosity, and gentle humor that always radiated from Rob's spirit. And we will deeply miss him.

I have worked with Rob since 2006 as part of Bard and BD. I considered him not only a brilliant partner but a friend and colleague . He will be missed greatly. If I might add some color to Robs accomplishments in the medical field. The technology that we developed together back in 2006 is still in used today millions and millions of times every single year and in almost every developed country on earth. His impact on patients across the globe through Lucent Medical changed the practice of medicine forever as it pertains vascular access. There are few people that can speak of such accomplishments but Rob can and will for many years to come.

I am so sorry for your loss. I will always cherish my time with Papa Golden. He always made me feel part of the family and as if I had my own father back. I am incredibly thankful to him for that. Wishing you all strength and comfort.
