ROBERT H.
Age 84, of Oakmont, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003. Mr. Hackett, a true gentleman, was born in Mt. Vernon, OH on April 24, 1919; the only child of Emma Dalrymple and Chichester M. Hackett. The family moved to Oakmont in 1924. A 1937 graduate of Oakmont High School, Mr. Hackett received a BA degree in art from Brown University in 1941. While at Brown, he was the President of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the Interfraternity Council. During WWII, he served in the Army 27th Engineer Training Battalion, the Army Air Force, and was a Lieutenant (jg) in the US Navy. He held the unique distinction of receiving three honorable discharges. Following the war, he resumed what would become a 50-year career at IDL, Inc., retiring as Chairman of the Board. In 1967, he served as President of the Screen Print Association, Intl. An avid golfer, Mr. Hackett was a member of the Board of Governors at Oakmont Country Club for 24 years and President for five. He was responsible for securing National Historic Landmark status for the Club, the first golf course to receive this distinction. He established the Fownes Foundation, a charitable organization that generates funds for the restoration and preservation of historic golf sites. Also a gifted artist, he created artwork and signage for many organizations, charities, and events. After retiring, he became an Alexander certified art instructor and taught at Glenns' Art Studio. He was a life-long member of Oakmont Presbyterian Church, serving as both a Deacon and an Elder. He was a director of Heritage Federal S&L Assoc., the Verona Cemetery, and the Kerr Memorial Museum; he is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Ashford; his daughter, Diane Harrell of Oakmont; his son Barry; and daughter-in-law Jane of Allison Park; and their three children, Sara, Alysa and Robert. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 1 at 7:00 pm at the Oakmont Presbyterian Church. Friends will be received at a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Oakmont Presbyterian Church, 415 Pennsylvania Avenue, 15139, Fownes Foundation, 1233 Hulton Road, 15139 or the Kerr Memorial Museum, 402 Delaware Avenue, 15139.
