Mr. Robert Kurt Hales Sr. died Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Duke University Medical Center. He was born in Wake County to the late J. T. Hales and Ethel Mae Johnson Hales. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Wilbur Hales. The loves of his life were his family, Shag dancing (Eno Beach Shag Club) Fishing (Reel Outdoors Buddies) planting a garden, building Adirondack chairs, and listening to good music. He was a veteran of the US Navy, having served as a boatswain mate.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Donna; two sons, Robert Kurt Hales, Jr. and wife Kristie, Kevin Thomas Hales and wife Tammy two daughters Kristy H. Thompson, Kimberly H. Capps and husband Phillip, one brother, Bobby G. Hales and wife Faye, sister-in-law Rose B. Hales, special brother-in-law David A. Sauls and wife Sari, six grandchildren, Brian Thompson, Lauren Thompson, Jacob Hales, Elijah Hales, Ashton Hales, and Weston Hales, many friends, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Clements Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends 12 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Clements Funeral Home in Durham.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Duke Cancer Center, 20 Duke Clinic Circle, Durham, NC 27710.

Donna, I am so sorry to have heard of Kurt's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Donna and family….Mandy and I were so sad to receive the news Friday. I feel privileged to have shared some wonderful times with your family over the years and will always smile when I think of Mr. Kurt. He was a very kind man and his love for his family was very evident. May God wrap his arms around each of you and help comfort you in the days to come.

Donna, Rex and I were shocked to hear of Kurt's passing this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and that beautiful family he loved so very much. Even though we haven't see you in a long time, we have the very best memories of our times with you and Kurt, especially those involving shagging, dance contests, good food and the first SOS you and Kurt ever attended.
