Robert "Bob" Hansen

Robert M. Hansen, known by all as Bob, 85, a native of Mississippi City, Miss., and a resident of Baton Rouge for 55 years, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009. Bob attended Gulf Coast Military Academy, Newark College and LSU. He received his master's degree in chemical engineering and his Ph.D. in 1955. He was inducted into the U.S. Army Infantry as a second lieutenant at age 18. He served his country in the Pacific Theater for 3 years. He was an honorably discharged veteran and an active alumnus of the Gulf Coast Military Academy. He served as president of the Alumni Association. His first job was in Newark, N.J., where he worked for RCA. He was on the team that developed a necessary component used in making color television. He was a retired employee with 31 years of dedication to Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. Throughout Bob's life he spoke on a variety of topics on the international level. He served as the president of the Audubon Girl Scout Council during the years his daughters were active in scouting. Through it all he remained faithful to his most precious treasure: his family. At age 12, he learned to navigate sailboats from his father at sea (a love he never outgrew). His travels brought him around the world to temporary residences in Sardinia, Italy, and New Delhi, India. His greatest joy and gift was his wife, Beth, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered for his love of bird watching and his love of the outdoors. He was devoted to his Jack Russell Terrier, Miles. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beth Hansen; daughters, Linda Hansen Manes and husband Tim, and Bobbie Hansen Day and husband Sidney; grandchildren, Robert Manes, Eddie Manes and wife Kristen, Linda Campo and husband Dennis and Christine Kalinowski and husband Mike; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sarah, Sydney, Garrett, James and Ellen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Olga Hansen; two brothers, Harry and Victor Hansen; Uncle Ede and Valborg Diessner; and granddaughter, Jamie Lynn Manes. He was an active member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, Nov. 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation at Broadmoor United Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. Entombment in Greenoaks Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, the Audubon Girl Scout program or to another charitable organization.
