HAWKEY, Robert Clarence

Eldest son of an early family of the Airdrie district, and (for family historians) the 5th Robert Hawkey in direct descent from Joseph and Eleanor of Lanhydrock, Cornwall, Robert Clarence Hawkey passed away in Calgary at the age of ninety-one years. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Marianne (nee Tebb), his infant son John Maguire Hawkey, his brother Francis, and by his wife of fifty- seven years, Catherine Margaret (nee Maguire). He is survived by his son Robert James Hawkey and daughter-in-law Charmaine Spencer of Vancouver. He is also survived by his brother Clifford (Donna) of Rocky Rapids, Alberta, sisters Majorie Lefevre of Calgary and Mary Underschultz of Edmonton, and by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He served for thirty years in the Royal Canadian Navy on HMC ships Ontario, Sioux, Crusader, Sussexvale and Fraser, as well as in various shore establishments including Naval Radio Station Churchill and HMCS Tecumseh and found friends everywhere. He was intensely curious about all aspects of the world and universe in which he found himself and felt privileged to live in a time when the fund of human knowledge expanded as never before. Born in the year of the first solo trans-Atlantic flight, he marveled that his name, listed aboard the NASA probe New Horizons, will sail among the stars long after Earth has become a cinder. Robert Clarence rests beside the love of his life, Catherine, in the Hawkey family plot at Airdrie. A memorial service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. A Private Graveside service will be held at the Airdrie Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Memorial tributes may be made to charities of choice.
