1917 - 2014 Born in Boone, Iowa, November 25, 1917. His family made the trek to Pasadena in August of 1923, just in time to see the opening of the Rose Bowl and the first Rose Bowl game and the 1923 Tournament of Roses Parade. Bob is a product of Pasadena Schools. Kindergarden at Jefferson Elementary, Junior High School at Marshall then High School at Pasadena High School. The 1932 earthquake caused the buildings to be condemned and tents were erected on the campus to serve as classrooms. Graduating in 1935, quit school and went to work for the Los Angeles Times where he wrote classified advertising copy and learned to sell on the telephone. In 1937 Bob enrolled at USC selecting his major in Journalism and a minor in Marketing. In 1939. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Officer Candidate Program. Graduating in June, 1941, Bob traded his civilian clothes for a Marine Corps uniform and a commision as 2nd Lieutenant. Ordered to the 2nd Marine Division, he participated in the battle on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian. Recurring Malaria brought him home for a 90 day furlough and marriage to Peggy Pierce. Bob returned to duty as commanding officer of the Marine detachment aboard the Light Cruiser U.S.S. Cleveland where he participated in the battle for Okinawa. Bob was one of the few Marines who served on the land, the sea and in the air. Prior to the Saipan landings he completed training as an air observer. Earning his wings he flew missions over the Islands before and during the battle, for this he was awarded the Bronze Star with a combat "V". He retired from the Corps as a Lt. Colonel. In 1946 he returned to civilian life opening a direct response advertising agency. Active in community service he was President of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles and a member of the Tournament of Roses of which he is an Honorary Director. So often, we have friends pass, pay our respects and move on. It is impossible to forget Bob. He showed me what friendship, professionalism, neighbors, family and life offered. He encouraged me to be the best I could be. He was a huge part of my success professionally and with my family. Bob will always be in my heart.

Bob touched so many people, and made each a better person. A man of words, there are not enough to describe him. Family. Rose Parade. Hero. Role Model. Kind. Generous. Inspirational. Teacher. Mentor. Encouraging. Gentleman. Loving. Caring. Truly extraordinary. Friend. All positive. I was privileged to have been hired by and work with Bob twice. And fortunate to have been his neighbor for 30 years. He taught me about direct response advertising, business, team work and credibility. I can't imagine what my career would have been without his guidance. I can't imagine a world without this fine man. Prayers to Peggy and the family he was so proud of.

I am proud to say I began my direct-marketing career at the Hemmings, Birkholm & Grizzard agency in Los Angeles. Everyone who worked there learned much from Bob, not only about the principles of DM, but about how to build relationships with co-workers, clients, family and others. Probably ten or more years after I left HB&G, Bob and Peggy came through Chicago (where I now live) on a business trip and treated my wife and me to a wonderful evening of dinner and conversation. More than just "marketing mentors" to me, my Dad (Bill Hinckley, 1932-2005) and Bob Hemmings were my friends and strong role models. I am blessed to have known them.

I am glad Bob lived a long and happy life, working in a field he felt passionate about and sharing that passion with others. He was so energetic, even into his later years, always teaching, and he inspired so many of today's leaders in the field. He was a great supporter of Marketing EDGE (formerly Direct Marketing Educational Foundation). He will be sorely missed. With sympathy to Peggy and your family.

Bob was proud of his Swedish heritage as his mother, Elsie, provided the Nordic genes and his father, Pearl, provided the business acumen that served Bob so well in his career. Bob was an extraordinary man who always stood out in whatever he did. For example, he was the youngest president of the Los Angeles Advertising Club, among his many accomplishments. Further, he told me that he had founded and sold at least seven businesses. He will be remembered and missed by his many friends. Bruce and Maj-Lis Hemmings

My Dad, my hero. I am missing you every second of every day. My life is filled with nothing but wonderful memories and love, thanks to you and Mom. What a hero and role model you have always been. I love you beyond words and time. I wish I could see you just one more time . There is a hole in my heart that will never be filled without you. There is another hero in heaven now with you there . I love you, Dad.
