Robert Holbach Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2024.
Robert Alan Holbach bid farewell to a life-well-lived with two of his favorite things by his side, his beloved wife Bonnie and a generous pour of bourbon on ice.

Devoted. Funny. Kind. Irreverent. Loving. Witty. A gentle soul with a wicked sense of humor. The life of the party. Words are inadequate. Words are insufficient. Yet words are all we have right now.

Born in Houston, Texas he spent his formative years in Glen Burnie, Maryland with his younger brothers Tom, Bill and Jim, younger sisters Mary Elizabeth and Sharon and his late parents, Betty and Al who he always swore loved him best. He spent his last 38 years in Florida, where he worked as a County Administrator and Director of Public Works enjoying all the amenities Florida has to offer with Bonnie like kayaking, fishing and time in Sanibel.

Alan spent a year at the Naval Academy before hightailing it to what he considered a much safer environment - serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He was on leave back in Glen Burnie judging neighborhood Christmas decorations when he met the love of his life. On their first date Alan told Bonnie he was going to marry her. She promptly dropped a dish of Moo Goo Gai Pan in her lap, excused herself to use the payphone and called everyone she knew to come pick her up. Luckily for Alan, a looming snowstorm kept all would-be rescuers away that evening. So he spent the rest of that night and the next 52 years that followed, trying his best to show his love for her.

The Holbach kids were very close-knit and known for their shenanigans and frequent ER visits. Whether doing it to themselves like the time in his 20s when Alan accidentally shot himself in the stomach. Or to each other, like during the war when Alan made his brother Jim zipline from his aircraft carrier to Alan's oiler in the middle of the ocean just so they could talk for a few minutes. There were other death defying feats like when Alan forgot Bonnie's name during their wedding vows and called her "what's her name." Or the time he genuinely believed it was a good decision to surprise Bonnie with a pressure washer for Christmas.

Despite all the years of recklessness, it was Alan's huge heart that got him in the end, most likely due to exhaustion from a lifetime of overuse. Alan showed his love in ways both big and small to every person he encountered, whether it was a grocery store clerk or his friends and family. He valued working with those less fortunate than himself, volunteering at jails and free clinics (he even became a pharmacy tech in his 70s) as well as service with the United Way and as a Rotarian. He would drop everything to be there for his friends and family. He was a devoted father to his two children, Jennifer and Christopher and their spouses Evan and Jenn. Never missing games, sleeping on the floor of a dorm room when they had their wisdom teeth pulled or offering solicited (and just as often, unsolicited) advice. Even last week, he was nagging...er helpfully suggesting Jennifer take her car in for service. He was so proud of his five grandchildren Dylan, Sydney (with whom he shared a birthday), Riley, Etta and Laly. He relished every opportunity to spend with them, and when he couldn't see them in person they shared frequent facetime calls. Despite his recurring (yet hilarious) struggle to correctly operate the front facing camera, if heard even a passing mention of the kids or grandkids wanted or needed, without fail a few days later a package would arrive containing that very thing.

Although Alan's big heart beats no more, he will live on forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and friends who became family during the 75 years we were fortunate enough to share with him. In lieu of flowers we ask that you perform some small act of kindness to help fill the giant void left by his absence. Some suggestions from Alan's life are bringing candy to the receptionist at the doctor's office, donating blood, striking up a conversation with a stranger in an elevator, making a financial donation to a food bank and volunteering your time with a local charity.

Condolences to Bonnie and family. Working with Alan as a consultant over the years was a pleasure seeing him in action. He was such a witty and enjoyable person to work with. He had a good sense of humor yet made a lot happen. He always made me laugh, and he enjoyed showing off his picture with President Bush though he was not a supporter. He was a person God blessed me to know that I learned a lot about leadership and how to enjoy working even when times are tough. What a blessing I got to spend time with him over the years. May he rest in peace.

Our sincerest condolences to Bonnie and the kids. Tim and I will always remember Alan fondly, and we're sad we hadn't stayed in close touch. We are thankful for the memories of the awesome holiday parties at the Holbach home. My fondest memory of Alan is him running point on FEMA after Charley, fighting tooth and nail for Charlotte county, very David and Goliath! Imagine that!! Alan got Public Works every penny due to us. Alan's fondest memory was probably meeting the Pres and Brother (Bush) when they visited here, he was always showing off that picture! Amazingly, we always said we were glad to be the first Hurricane of that awful season. Tim and I are, and always will be, proud to have been a part of Alan's Charlotte County Public Works family.

I had a privilege to work with Alan at VBA pharmacy where he was a volunteer pharmacy technician. And, as a pharmacist, I can tell you that he was great at it. And
no matter how much work was done, we always had time to talk, to joke , and laugh.
We became pretty good friends. One time my husband and I,
Alan and Bonnie even went out together to celebrate both of our wedding anniversaries. It was so nice to see how much Alan loved Bonnie. He also loved to talk about kids and grandchildren. He was a great man with with a huge and loving heart. I am going to miss him terribly.

My first memory was at the rehearsal dinner when Chris and Jenn got married. I won´t share the whole story but Alan was there when I needed him! He definitely had a heart of gold and he will definitely be missed. Sending hugs and prayers to Bonnie, Chris and Jennifer.

One thing I learned from Alan: Carpe Diem!! I´ll never forget visiting Sanibel with the Holbachs. Wearing a headlamp, Alan hunted for shells before sunrise. Then came the swimming, biking, kayaking, and partying. He did what he loved and loved what he did. Alan was kind and generous to every person he met. Cheers Alan.

I was so saddened to hear of Alan´s passing. It would be impossible for me to articulate the impact he had on my life. I can easily say no single person was more instrumental in shaping my career than Alan. He believed in me and would provide valuable wisdom that would invariably be right. He and Bonnie were always so gracious in inviting us to their amazing get togethers where we would experience food choices we had never been exposed to previously.

Alan was always looking out for the little guy and his progressive philosophies certainly had an impact on my life and even my choices as I have matured. He was a wordsmith and would always hit you with an obscure fact or piece of wisdom that I would often challenge and then research only to learn he was accurate. This even prompted me to learn new words every week and incorporate them into a conversation or written correspondence. Literally the first word I remember he used in a performance evaluation that I was compelled to look up was "aplomb". I still use this word often and remember him fondly every time I have.

I will keep Bonnie and his family, whom he loved so much, in my thoughts and prayers. Alan was a good-natured, giving and wise mentor who I will profoundly miss.

I am so grateful to have known Alan for all these years. They don't come any better. He was always kind, generous of heart and my goodness how he loved, loved, loved his Bonnie and the life you built together.

Alan and I grew to know each other following Hurricane Charley. His first of many acts of kindness was bringing me an iced coffee following many consecutive days of EOC duty and no sleep. There were so many more that followed. I will miss his wit, his willingness to tell it like it is and his devotion to his family and his community. I will miss his sly grin, I will miss the twinkle in his eyes, and so tonight I will pour a two-finger glass of bourbon in his honor.

My love and prayers to you Bonnie and your family. Heaven truly gained an amazing soul.
