Robert Alexander Ingram
Dec. 6, 1942 - March 24, 2023
DURHAM, North Carolina - Bob Ingram's strong foundation in family and character hails from his upbringing in Charleston, IL, and his valuable experiences as an Eastern Illinois University graduate. Bob enthusiastically devoted most of his life championing the research-intensive pharmaceutical industry's efforts towards the discovery and development of new medicines. The goal of helping people feel better, do more and live longer, was his mantra.
Bob lived his creed of prioritizing his life around family, faith and friends. His legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those he touched and so willingly mentored. Bob Ingram had a special way of inspiring others to do and be their best.
The family will memorialize Bob's life in a private ceremony in the mountains of Highlands, NC.

My sincere condolences to the Ingram family. I was blessed to have been employed down through the Glaxo, GW and GSK years and I often speak of him today in terms of work culture, work/life balance and genuine care. What a "class act" leader he was. RIH and thank you Bob Ingram.

I had the opportunity to work with/for Mr. Ingram for a decade while he served on the Allergan Board of Directors. I was the Corporate Secretary and spent countless hours in meetings and at dinners with him. Mr. Ingram was the consummate professional, but much more than that, he was so genuinely interested in other people and so humble despite his incredible accomplishments. He was the very best and I always looked forward to seeing him and speaking with him. We also shared a love of Porsche, and he would drive my car from the Board meetings to dinner where we could be alone to talk about his amazing collection rather than going with the group. He was a total gentleman and is deeply missed. My condolences to his family, who he loved dearly.

I am so sorry to learn of Bob's passing (and apologetic for being late in acknowledging the same). Bob was a friend and mentor (dating back to his GW/GSK days) and a wonderful Porsche friend. I will forever remember his kindness and generosity. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I met Bob (he insisted that I did not call him Mr. Ingram) at the Amelia Island Concours. I had never spoken to a man as successful as him. I paid attention to what he said and how he treated me as I know that's why he got to the pinnacle of success. I am a relative nobody, but every time I saw he hom he made me feel like somebody. Special. I'm sorry he's gone. Tremendous gentleman. My sympathies to the many who miss him.

May he Rest In Peace and may the Lord´s blessings be upon your family at this time.

Bob, your were a motivational speaker who lead GSK with integrity. I was very proud our industry back then. You always took input from all levels of the company. I was only a salesman in Idaho and you always took my calls and listened to what was happening with our day to day interaction with our customers. If you could you change policies to help us make more sales so we could help more people with our medicines you did it.(thank you)
You over the top gracious to everyone. Janet and I celebrated our first anniversary in the Bermuda at a presidents club. We also celebrated our 10th anniversary in Bermuda at another presidents club and you remembered that our first anniversary was there.(crazy memory you had) You introduced me to Mike in Bermuda and he has become a dear friend and brother. (Thank you) Bob you were a networking machine at all levels of the company and government. You had a Connection with everyone.
You were always faithful to your wife. You had a strong internal compass for right and wrong for your family, company and Government.
You are deeply missed by all. However, I know in the end you put your trust in our Savior Jesus Christ and we will be together forever in Heaven, what a joyous day that will be when my Jesus I shall see.
With Prayer, Love and Respect

Bob was a great man, an important influence on my life. He was our youth baseball coach for a handful of years in Cincinnati Ohio. Bob's son Michael was a teammate on our very good Midland Baseball team. Bob's leadership and positive mentoring left an indelible impression and positive lifetime memories for me; I still have letters, messages Bob wrote to me as a youth, both while he was my coach and after he moved from Cincinnati for job promotion. My mom/family loved the Christmas cards/letters we exchanged for several years after the Ingram family moved away from Cincinnati to Kansas and beyond. Bob was truly an inspirational coach and role model to me. It is in part because of Bob and his positive influence that I have been a youth and HS coach for the past 3 decades. Ironically it was only when I came to work for Merrell Dow during Law School that I realized Bob was not only a great youth baseball coach, he was an incredibly successful business leader who was respected by many at MMD well after he had moved on to even greater business opportunities. I am forever grateful to Bob for the lasting memories and mentoring he provided to myself and my teammates in Anderson Township/Cincinnati Ohio. My best regards and prayers for Bob and his family A life well lived, Bob's positive effects on others is the greatest memorial of all. God Bless.

My prayers and condolences to the whole family. Bob Ingram was a man of great virtue, faith and family. He was a great leader here at Glaxo. He was humble, kind, a gentleman, welcoming, intelligent, sharp, he never forgot a name, he had a wonderful smile and way of making me and others smile and be comfortable. He cared and spent time with others regardless of their role. He was a tremendous speaker and made me feel as if he was only speaking to me when many were in the audience. An Icon... I am sure the Lord was waiting on the other side saying 'well done my good and faithful servant"

I had the honor of working at GSK under the leadership of Mr. Ingram. He lead with inspiration and confidence. Because of his leadership we all knew we played a part of helping people live longer and more enjoyable lives. He always communicated how important each and everyone of us was to the success of GSK.

We'd just moved to Raleigh from southern California in 2008 and were introduced to Bob at our first Porsche club Cars and Coffee gathering. My husband, Eddie, attended a subsequent gathering, but I stayed home. I received a phone call. It was Bob. He said he was disappointed that I wasn´t at the gathering, but oh how much he enjoyed spending time talking with Eddie. He wanted us to have his cell number. Bob said Jerry Seinfeld also has his cell # and Bob shared some of the crazy fun conversations (i.e. pranking) the two of them would have. Who does that? Bob.
We enjoyed spending time with the Ingram family, including the grand kids, being invited to join them at events, lunches, and dinners. We felt like part of the family. Who does that? Bob.
Bob never failed to inquire about my family. Always picking up where we left off the last time we'd spoken, in the way close friends do. Bob was an excellent listener. I shared with Bob the heartache and sorrow of helping my mom and stepdad with matters of illness, life and death. Bob, never offering unsolicited advice, always listening, and after listening, asking if there was anything he could do. There wasn´t, but I knew he´d help, if he could. That was Bob.
Our condolences to Jeanie, Cam, Michael, Rory and the entire Ingram family.

My deepest condolences go out to Jeanie, Cam, Rory and the rest of the Ingram family. I first met Bob about 15 years ago when my son and I visited the Ingram Collection museum with other Porsche enthusiasts. My son asked Bob what a Carrera GT sounded like; his response was to ask one of his sons to start it up inside the museum! Jeanie was not pleased as she had just dusted the counters before our visit. I saw Bob on several occasions after that - including the Porsche by Design exhibit at the NC Museum of Art, Pinehurst Concours, and the EURO Auto Festival in Greenville SC. Bob and I walked around the Porsche by Design exhibit and I commented on the unique design of the Carrera Abarth, and Bob told me the story about the car and how his family were able to acquire it.
As many folks have said, Bob was a wonderful person who also remembered my name, was completely engaged every time we had a conversation, and always reminded me that it was a family Porsche collection. Although I met Bob after his retirement from GSK, it was easy to see that his engaging personality, his communications skills, and his intellect helped make him so successful in business and in life. He was a very special person.

It´s been years since I last spoke with Bob. But I have thought of him often over that time with the warmest thoughts. He was so sharp, always dressed impeccably. When he spoke from a podium, it was as if he was speaking only to you. When he did converse one-on-one, he made you feel interesting, important and valued. I´m grateful to have had the honor of knowing him. My most sincere sympathies to the family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Jeannie, and all of his family at this difficult time. We are so saddened at the loss of such a gentle giant in our world. We each were lucky to work with Bob in Washington DC, representing GSK, and then Marguerite's collaborations with him in the early days of the CEO Roundtable. We credit Bob with introducing us 26 years ago, and are so very grateful he took the time to be sure that we had our first date! Bob was a special man in the pharma industry, because he looked at the industry through the eyes of people it touched and not just the spreadsheet of the business. Bob was one of a kind and he, along with his example and leadership, will be horribly missed.

I had the privilege of knowing Bob from a very young age as we both were raised in Charleston, IL. Bob never forgot his roots, and we would always enjoy talking about longtime common friends from our hometown when we would get together...whether on business, or catching a sporting event. Bob had an amazing recall of details, and never forgot a person he had met. I so enjoyed working with him as well in recent years with his venture firm. He will be greatly missed by all. My condolences to Jeanie, Michael, Rory, and Cam, and all of his Hatteras colleagues.

I first met bob in the late 70's when I was a sales rep for Merrell National, and he was a Regional Sales Manager. Even then you could see that Bob was an extraordinary leader. Throughout my career, whenever I saw Bob, he was a warm and welcoming person. I was an area president with SmithKline Beecham' OTC Division when the merger of SB and Glaxo occurred. Bob came to Philly, to SB's home office to talk about the merger. After the presentation, I went up to Bob with some SB colleagues, ad though I hadn't seen him for several years, he greeted me so warmly that it made my colleagues feel good about the merger.
Bob was a great leader, and I don't think he ever met a person whose name he forgot, or who didn't come away feeling better for having met him.
Rest in Peace, Bob

Really saddened to learn of the death of a great man this morning. In his career and with his car collection, Mr. Ingram was larger than life, but I'll never forget how he treated me when I was a college dropout washing cars or how he later inspired me to apply to Duke for grad school.
He's the only person I knew from my Ferrari days that became more generous with his time when I no longer had anything to offer. I just wish I could've achieved more before he passed, so he could fully see his impact on me.

Have so many fond memories of Bob while working at Glaxo, then Glaxo Welcome then GSK. Every time I think of Bob I smile. He made a conscience effort to know everybody's name and something of interest to them which he would converse. Smart, kind, thoughtful and a man of integrity- all these attributes touched many people as these shared memories attest. Wish to extend heartfelt condolences for the family and close friend of Bob for their loss.

Peace Be With Mr. Ingram and his family.
I too am one of the fortunate people to have known "Bob". I was fortunate in my career to have helped, in small ways, support his many efforts, along with Chris, Andy, Janie and John, to expand access to medicines for the most needy in our country.
When you were on the receiving end of Bob´s expression of his appreciation of your efforts, you knew it was sincere, and very present. It was incredible that even when you may not have seen him for months, he might appear to you quietly in a busy meeting venue someplace and say hello and catch up some. He never failed to somehow place a hand written note on my desk to acknowledge a promotion. While we all knew his efforts to innovate/improve medicine and health in this country, he was focused on the employees, as well.
"What have you done to support a salesperson today". And that was not for "sales", it was as he knew, to help them get the awareness out there of medicines that could improve patients health and life to do more.
I still recall the last time I saw Bob, it was a rainy, miserable, dark evening in Chapel Hill, and he was at a restaurant in Southern Village, small table, along a window, with Charlie Sanders. He looked out the window, saw me, and nonetheless they both came outside, to catch up some.
Bob, you shall be missed, and you were such a supportive and encouraging light in my early and middle career. Glaxo was never the same after you left.
Best to all my Glaxo former colleagues I see posting their condolences, as well.

Jeanie, Michael, Rory and Cam, My deepest condolences go out to you. Once upon a time, Bob shared his remarkable expertise, his incomparable network, his world-class leadership talents and some favorites in his astounding Porsche collection with the state of North Carolina. It was just another in a long line of classy moves he made over decades as one of the Triangle´s most visionary and generous community leaders. Working with him was like taking a master class in how to move through the world with grace, wit and foresight no matter what challenge was put before you. He was at once down-to-earth and worldly. I think he made everyone around him want to be better, strive harder, and be more selfless. May he rest in peace, with the sound of an air-cooled engine rumbling soothingly in the background.

I can only imagine how wonderful he was as a leader at GSK. Rest in peace.

Our deepest condolences to the Ingram Family, our connection to Bob was our love of Porsches. Meeting him and talking cars at The Cars and Coffee Meet ups was always a pleasure and he was always a kind and gracious human. He will be missed by us all

To the Ingram family: I only met Bob Ingram once and he made a lasting impression on me and my teenage son. I had taken my son to the NC Museum of Art for the Porsche exhibit as a birthday outing. It was a quiet afternoon at the show and we started chatting with a very kind gentleman who owned the car we were admiring. He took time to wish my son a happy birthday, to ask about his interests, and to share additional interesting information about his car and other cars; he was so kind. I asked him if he was in the car industry and he very modestly told me he had worked his career in the pharmacy industry. He gave my son his card and invited him to call him. Later, my son realized that we met Robert Ingram, former CEO of GSK. More importantly my son learned a life lesson on treating each person you meet as a person worthy of kindness and respect. That´s exactly how Bob treated this teenage boy who was simply enthralled with cars. What a privilege to have met him, not because of his professional accolades and accomplishments, or extensive car collection, but because he was a caring and compassionate person to a stranger. The epitome of a great human being. I hope my son has carried that lesson with him into his adulthood. I´m sure Robert Ingram had a positive impact on many, many people. My condolences. Bob was a great guy--period. He will be missed for sure in the car community and in the Triangle as well. I had the honor or speaking with him and shaking his hand at Amelia Island this year, and I am grateful for those few moments. He never failed to share that warm smile and gracious manner--a true gentleman. My best to you, his family, at this time. Terry Jones

I am able to recall so many positive thoughts about Robert Ingram, the key one is just how great a leader he was to so many. His ability to create and influence the best, and his ability to encourage the best to build for a bright future. I was very lucky to have met, worked for, and known Bob as the great leader he was.

Heard this morning from a dear friend and former GSK colleague about the passing of Bob Ingram. Such a good family man, respected leader, and caring person! A particular experience that has been etched in my mind for over 25 years was when I was overseeing the Glaxo new district manager training program. We held a training event at Graylyn Conference in Winston Salem for 30+ new managers. Bob always made it a point to want to meet and speak with any new hire classes because he knew the importance of their roles in leading, coaching and serving their teams. Despite the couple hour drive from RTP, he was determined to spend time with the group that evening over dinner. He had a unique way of making someone feel they were the most important person in the room and they were riveted to his every word. He didn't leave the event until around 10:30pm and come to find out he had to catch an international flight the next morning at 5:30am. Needless to say I apologized for not knowing his schedule and the inconvenience but his response back to me was simply "I'll do that every chance I can, it's truly my honor to meet with these future leaders!" This might seem insignificant to some, but it left a lasting impression for me and every individual at that conference for years to come. May God bless to Bob and his wonderful family as well!

There are no adequate words to describe the extraordinary impact Bob had in my life and in the lives of the many others honored to work with him. I was particularly blessed to not only have our paths align at GW/GSK, but then again over the following years at NCMA. I will never forget the personal mentorship, encouragement and support he gave me. Like so many others who encountered him, his influence on my career and personal growth was immeasurable.
Jeanie, Rory, and Cam, my prayers go with you as you grapple with his loss. Please know you have a sea of people who loved and respected Bob and would do anything for you. Please don't hesitate to accept the support because it is heartfelt and genuine.
My deepest respect and sympathy,
Caterri
