Robert Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2025.
Robert "Bob" Allen Johnson, born October 7, 1949, ran-yes, ran!-into the arms of Jesus on January 3, 2025, surrounded by love from his family and friends after battling significant health issues.

To know Bob was to be in the company of one of the funniest guys around. His sense of humor-a gift inherited from his father-is a defining characteristic we will remember for years to come. A laugh with Bob brought joy to the rest of your day.

To know Bob was also to be loved by him deeply and fiercely. Bob loved his people wholeheartedly. He cared deeply for his friends, siblings, kids, and grandkids, but most importantly, he loved Jesus with all his heart. He made it abundantly clear that he was ready to spend eternity with his Savior as he bravely entered the gates of heaven.

Fondly known as Bob, Bobby, Stitch, Dad, Papa Bob, and Grandpa Bob, he was born in Chicago and grew up in Pennsylvania and several Chicagoland suburbs, including Carpentersville, where he resided for most of his life. He graduated from Dundee High School in 1968. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1970-1971 as a Specialist E5, clearing helicopter landing zones in the field. After his heroic service, he married and was blessed with his two wonderful children, Tyler and Briana. Bob loved being a dad and grandpa, and his face lit up any time he shared stories about his kids and their families.

Bob was many things in his life and had numerous passions. He worked at the Arlington Race Track as a hot walker, served as a train conductor for Metra, and was a skilled leather crafter who handmade leather accessories to sell at trade shows. Of course, he was also a Harley enthusiast.

In May of 2014, Bob was in a tragic motorcycle accident during a church cross-country ride that left him paralyzed and dependent on a wheelchair. Though his loved ones feared they might lose him then, his perseverance and strength allowed him to fight hard to keep living. This unwavering determination gave him the courage to never lose sight of the story God was writing through him.

Bob found new passions after his accident, including playing games with his family and friends, giving rides to his grandkids (and everyone else's kids) on his wheelchair, playing online poker, and participating in fantasy sports. Perhaps his greatest passion became serving at Stateline Church, where his son Tyler pastors. He served faithfully on the Host Team and the Prayer Team. Almost every Sunday morning for nearly eight years, you could find Bob at the front door, ready to greet you with a smile.

He leaves behind a family that loved him deeply, including his sister Linda (Corky) White; brother Howard Johnson; daughter Briana (Steve) Engmann; son Tyler (Randi) Johnson. His former wife and mother to his children, Kim Henriksen; and grandchildren Kayla, Josiah, and Amaya Engmann, as well as Reid and Chase Johnson. He is joined in heaven by his parents, Vernon and Marion Johnson, along with many beloved aunts and uncles.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Hines VA Medical Center in Chicago for the exceptional care Bob received over the 10+ years following his accident.

Most importantly, the family is eternally grateful to Gary Schweinert-Bob's best friend and caregiver-who so selflessly dedicated the past 10 years to serving and caring for Bob. Without you, Gary, we would not have the cherished memories we hold so dear today. We are forever grateful for your love and support. You are, and forever will be, a part of our family.

A Celebration of Life and Love will be held at Stateline Church, 601 N Perryville, Rockford, IL, on Saturday, January 18. An open house will take place from 12-3 p.m., followed by a remembrance service at 3 p.m. Dress comfortably and come ready to celebrate Bob, now fully healed and walking with Jesus!

In lieu of flowers, Bob's family would love for you to consider donating to Stateline Church's Benevolence Fund. Stateline was Bob's home church, where he played a pivotal role on the Prayer Team. Stateline Church values generosity deeply and uses the Benevolence Fund to assist those in need within the community. Donations can be made at https://www.stateline.church/give/.

For those unable to attend in person, Bob's remembrance service will also be available to stream at https://www.stateline.church/BobJohnson/.

Bob's family looks forward to celebrating his incredible life with all who loved him. Thank you for keeping Bob and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

I known Bob for many years! I have a lot of memories mostly good. I met Bob at Willow Creek Church when I came back to Jesus Christ, our Savior. We were at Willow Creek church many times a week. We volunteered at the Care Center there on Tuesdays. One night serving there Bob and I were talking. He said words to me that changed my life and view for the rest of my life.
He said "Is that something Jesus would do"
We did a lot rides with High Road Riders and on our own.
I moved out to Belvedere. We started looking for a church out in the Rockford, Belvidere area. Bob told me that his son Tyler just opened up a church in Rockford and to go check it out. From the first service there Terry and I found our church home. The rest is history.
Love you, brother see you when I get there

How grateful I am for the blessing of having known Bob, first as a fellow Guest Ministry Host at Willow Creek Community Church, as we worked together in the balcony. After the accident Bob made my day on Wednesdays, when I would head to his house. We shared stories, through laughter and sometimes tears, and prayed together, and over time Gary joined in on those precious visits. The presence of the Holy Spirit was wonderfully evident, and I would leave feeling so very blessed and thankful. We will miss attending the service, while we will be visiting family that weekend, but we pray that many present will be moved by the testimony of Bob´s devotion to Jesus!

Bob was a true prayer warrior. I´ve been to many churches before I found Stateline, and when I walked in and met Bob, his warm welcoming smile eased my nervousness on my first visit. That was 5 years ago. I put a prayer request in a couple months ago for my friend and her family. And Bob reached out to me personally to let me know my request was received and that he was sending it to the team to pray. I never experienced such a personal experience from a church like that. And to add, he reached out to me 3 times after that to check in on my friend and let me know that him and the prayer team were still praying and checking in for updates. I thought wow, what an amazing prayer leader and an awesome church I now belong to. I will truly miss that huge smile at the front door every Sunday.

I came to know Bob through a pray request. 2024 I started having health issues. I reached out for prayers and that´s how I met Bob. He was so kind and caring. He would always check in with me when he knew I had an upcoming appointment to let me know he was praying for me as well as sending out a reminder to the prayer team. I will forever be grateful for his kindness and prayers. My thoughts and prayers are with all that known and loved Bob.

I don't think I ever laughed as hard or had more fun than the times I spent with Bob. He made me a heavy leather tool belt with my name embossed on it for a Christmas present 40 years ago and I think of him every time I put it on.

I was gonna call you last weekend Bob. Maybe that was you passing me by on the way to heaven. I have too many stories and jokes but I can't tell them. I knew Bob since late 70s before he was saved. Visited him and called a couple of times a year and brought coffee for Gary. Visited at Hines once. I will only weep a little since I know Bob is with the Lord. Godspeed my friend.

Sharing a room with Bob during a 2 day HRR overnite ride. He recorded me sleeping, claimed I was snoring! I couldn´t hear a thing when he played back the audio.

Bob was the very first person I met when I moved to the Chicagoland area in 2004. We met over a random game of pool at the TBar in West Dundee. I broke dry and he ran the table on me. We have been friends ever since that night. Bob allowed God to use him to introduce me to Christianity, church, and helped me become a fully devoted follower of Christ. He exhibited the fruit of the Spirit as much as anyone I ever knew, or will know. I´ll be looking for a pool hall up there with Harley´s parked in front of it. I will surely find him there.

What a JOY and PRIVILEGE it was to be one of Bob´s friends during the past couple years. He was a part of our small group through Stateline Church. I could go on for pages stating what a truly great guy Bob was. But most of all I was GREATLY INSPIRED by Bob´s wisdom, faith, perseverance & love. He loved the Lord and he loved all around him. He was a "glass 9/10 full" kind of guy. I learned a lot from him and he will be sorely missed. I am sooo thankful (and a bit jealous) that Bob gets to be fully restored and with his Creator in whom he cherished. Great job, good and faithful servant! Will see you soon. Eternity is just around the corner for all of us...

Though we never met Bob, we heard about his legacy and love for Jesus from our next door neighbors, Kerry and Patti Bahnik. This couple has showered us with unconditional kindness and support since the moment we moved in; so we know Bob´s example of showing Christ´s love will be carried forward by all the people who knew and loved him! We lift our hands in praise that Bob is now completely restored and rejoicing in Heaven! And we pray for the hearts of all those who will miss his earthly presence until reunited with him in our Eternal Home. Jean and John Wirick

There are some people who just fit a role and personality as if they were a round peg destined to go into a round hole! That was Bob, how he related to all generations, greeted people at church with a smile where the first person many saw at the door was a man who reflected the character of Christ! Bob had a great sense of humor also! I can just see Bob in heaven praising Jesus for all he had done for him and STANDING before his presence!!

Bob was such a wonderful man! It was not the same if he was not at the door greeting everyone! He was such an avid Chicago Bear fan and we had many fun conversations about them. I know they won for him last weekend and I know he was enjoying it! I loved that man and will miss him so much, such a positive, kind man! I know he is in a better place and smiling down on us at Stateline!!

Tony and I have had the privilege of knowing Bob since 2012 when we met him at Willow Creek church in South Barrington, IL. We all belonged to the High Road Riders motorcycle group. We had many many miles of fun and laughter with Bob riding our motorcycles. He lived with us in Elgin for a while due to the work being done on his home after the accident. We got to know Bob quite well and continued our friendship over the years. He has a place in our hearts forever. Until we meet again...... love you Bob.
