Robert Kennedy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2009.
KENNEDY, Dr. Robert R., MD Former Sag Harbor, NY resident Robert R. Kennedy, MD, passed away in Sweden, ME, where he was residing. He was 88. Born in Brooklyn in 1920, he graduated from Bishop Laughlin High School in Brooklyn, NY and St. John's University in Queens, NY. He completed his medical internships at St. Catherine's Hospital and Long Island College Hospital, both in Brooklyn. Following his service as a naval officer during World War II, he started his medical practice in Sag Harbor in 1948. He later joined the Old Town Medical Center in Southampton, working there until his retirement in 1985. According to his family, a round of golf always brought him joy. One of the original members of the Southampton Golf Club, he continued to play during his retirement in Maine. But there was nothing that gave him greater joy than serving his patients in Sag Harbor and Southampton throughout his almost 40 years of service to these communities. Known for his compassionate and caring manner, he developed many friendships on the East End of Long Island and his legacy will be one of dedication and concern for anyone who required his services. He is survived by two sons Edward Kennedy of Miami, FL and Kevin Kennedy of East Granby; a daughter, Maureen Kennedy Del Balzo of Maryland; nine grandchildren (including Patrick and Connor Kennedy of East Granby); and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Florence (née Fuller) Kennedy and his oldest son, Robert R. Kennedy Jr. Funeral services were held at the Wood Funeral Home in Fryeburg, ME and entombment at Elmvale Cemetery in Waterford, ME.
