I grew up in Wellsville and lived a few blocks away for most of my youth. I graduated in 1955, a year or two ahead of Jon. Many pleasant memories of both boys...they were good guys. Please pass on my condolences to Jon and to Bobs family. I lost my sister Linda two weeks ago. Best wishes,
Bill Armstrong

I just learned about the passing of a great person. Anyone from Wellsville who lived in the town from mid 20th century knew and liked the Kiggins family. My memories of Robert are many but I mostly remember his days on the basketball court. He made me a better player. When he was a senior I was a goofy but growing sophomore, his stature as a player was to win with honor. He was a gentleman with class. I can really feel the loss.
Love to Ann and Jon and the WHOLE family.

In the ten years we worked together at SCRA, I found Bob to be an excellent manager, particularly adept at business development and negotiation. More importantly, he was a leader. He hired good people and let them have the freedom to excel. He truly cared for his people and they knew it and respected him. He literally created ATI and built it into a respected research management operation. Larry Druffel

Many ATI associates received our first business exposure from Bob, as he hired quite a few of us following our military service. His patient, friendly manner established a welcoming environment-- at one point Bob was responsible for having over 700 years of combined military experience at what was then a small ATI team. He set the benchmark for how a boss should be: firm, fair, consistent, compassionate, caring, engaged. I recall him dropping by on my first day, chatting with me about my family and commenting that he looked forward to me 'personalizing' my office. giving it a sense of permanency. He taught me a great deal and I use 'Bob-isms' in my daily work activities. It is fair and easy to say that Bob made a difference in life to so many-- we miss him already.

Penny,
You have my heartfelt condolence. I know how much the two of you loved each other. I remember seeing you, Robert, and his family after the WVU-Citadel basketball game; I was visiting a friend for the weekend while attending West Liberty. I was so excited to see Robert play. He was a master of many skills; most of all he was a sincere, trustworthy, and intelligent person, and you were a perfect fit for him.
Sincerely,
Edith

It was a pleasure to know you and really tough to say goodbye. "The best ornaments of a house are the people who frequent it" and you were a cherished gem. You will be missed fishing, at Thursday's breakfast, and over a glass of wine. Thanks for enriching our lives. Goodbye in body but not in mind or spirit. Sherry and Baird Oldfield

Dear Robert,How lucky we cousins were as kids. I remember especially the summer vacations at Guilford Lake playing games, swimming, racing for the outhouse, checking to see if "horse corn" was good to eat. Do you remember the day we buried the butterfly? We gathered rocks and flowers and with tenderness and prayers we placed it in its final resting place. Silly rough-housing cousins who took time from our play to do this kindness It is my favorite memory of all those summers together. To you and your family I send my love and prayers. Your Cousin, Gail.

I first met Mr. Kiggans at his granddaughters' swim meet. He was a wonderful supporter of his granddaughters Hannah and Kaleigh and attended most of their summer league and high school swim meets as well as travel meets for yearlong swimming. My daughter Sophia was a regular at his house when he and Penny would have the swim team girls over for parties or get togethers. He and Penny are always so sweet and welcoming. He was a devoted father and grandfather and loved his wife and family more than anything. We often talked about the Air Force.... since being an Air Force Brat was my life for 21 years. His passing is heartbreaking and he will be greatly missed by everyone he touched.

More than ten years ago, Bob introduced himself and Penny at a home basketball game. I enjoyed sitting near the Conroy teammates. When I couldn't master the complicated Kiggans handshake, Bob compromised with a simple fist bump that I looked forward to, season in and season out. I admired his grace, humility, strength, generosity and welcoming smile. The game won't be the same without you.

Bob was a great friend. He was always positive, saw only the best in people and always responded to my pleas for help. I will miss him at Citadel basketball games. He loved his bulldogs. May his memory be eternal.

Bob always exhibited his most endearing quality- a smile to let you know that he was there as a friend. His career from The Citadel throughout the Air Force and into his civilian life earned him Gold Stars. We will all miss him. Our hearts go out to Penny and his fine family.

Bob was not only my boss, but a great friend and a huge mentor in my professional development. Bob taught me about life, relationships, and business. He was an integral part of the metalcasting resource consortia at ATI, and even after his retirement would ask how the program and people involved were doing. He made it a point to know something special about every one of his employees - it was not all about business, but the people were very important to him as well. He will be missed.

Bob hired me into Human Resources at SCRA/ATI. We worked together for 16 years. He always showed compassion for employees and held everyone to high standards. His leadership will be missed. I am grateful for the many opportunities he afforded and fondly remember his passion for the Bulldogs. My condolences to his family...he always shared stories of Penny and his daughters...he was so proud of you!

I had the pleasure of working with Bob during his tenure as an ITI board member. I will remember him for his love of family, gentle spirit, positive attitude, sense of humor, and humble confidence. I enjoyed listening to his stories and often thanked him for his service to our country and to ITI. My thoughts and prayers are with the Kiggans family.

Bob gave me my first job out of grad school...I think it helped that I was a Citadel grad! I remember being intimidated when I first entered his office for the interview...he quickly put me at ease with his (awesome) humor and kind demeanor. Working for ATI, and thus Bob, as my first career position gave me a great start and I took away so many lessons that I have continued to lean on during my life and career. He was an absolute professional, a very grounded and approachable leader...and, of course, he was hilarious. God Bless, thank you Bob!
