Robert Ledogar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2025.
Robert J. Ledogar passed away on July 2, 2025 while staying with family in Northampton, MA. Born on August 3, 1933 in New York City to Edward J. Ledogar and Margaret Meany, Bob studied for the priesthood at the Maryknoll Seminary and the Institut Catholique in Paris, where he received his doctorate in Theology. He was ordained a Maryknoll priest in 1959 but left the priesthood in 1969.

Bob received a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from MIT. He married Eleanor Price in 1971. Bob's research into questionable practices by multinational food and drug companies in Latin America led to the publication of his acclaimed book Hungry for Profits in 1975. Bob's career with the American Friends Service Committee and UNICEF took him to Africa and Central America. Returning to New York in 1989, he and Elly moved to the Upper West Side, and Bob worked for UNICEF until retirement. In 1995 he became Associate Executive Director of CIET International, a global network of non-profit training and research organizations. Bob was also active in his community, singing with a choir in Harlem and helping establish the Bloomingdale Aging in Place community (BAiP).

Bob's beloved wife Elly and his brothers, Edward and Stephen Ledogar and his sister Anne Leyden predeceased him. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Donations in Bob's honor may be made to The American Friends Service Committee.
