Belated sympathies from some Cincinnati cousins.

This news is doubly tragic for me. Let me explain.

I am Andrew Balterman, son of Alice Heyn Balterman. Mom-- who is now 94 -- visited Bubba and family and relatives a number of times. I learned what a great array of family we have in the area . . . and what a magical place Palo Alto was.

A boyhood friend of mine had moved to NOLA and told me much and often about the joys of the area. I ended up going to the Jazz Fest two or three times, sleeping on his couch. I made it a point to also visit Donaldsonville that first trip and it was as advertised!

On my most recent Fest visit a few years ago I was accompanied by my cousin Michael Ferro of San Francisco. We made our greatly anticipated pilgrimage to Donaldsonville and were royally entertained by cousin Robert at his home, at lunch and at the store and the museum. That was a memorable day curated by a wonderful man.

During that trip Robert requested that I send to him photos of Jacob Lemann's local tomb. I eventually took a number of photos of it and then....procrastination. I never sent them to him. Today, realizing that it is Fest time again and-- being recently retired-- finally having the time and presence of mind to get my little package of prints ready to send to Robert, I googled his name in order to confirm that I had the correct address and . . . I was struck dumb by the news I saw.

How sad I am; you certainly have my sympathies and, I'm sure, those of my Mother. I shall alert her and cousin Mike today so that they hopefully can see the expiring Guest Book. For me this innocent internet errand ended up being a tragic one with unfortunate timing, I certainly had hoped to please Robert with those photos and I can only blame my rotten procrastination.

I must ask: to whom can I now send the photographs? My e-mail (written in a "safe" way) is: 'abalterman' -- followed by the @ symbol -- followed by the word 'fuse' -- followed by '.net' . Please let me know and this time I shall be prompt.

Again, our sympathies to all.

Dearest Dee: I can still see Robert as a brand new father. What joy! He was such a loving and wonderful man who made everyone feel at home when he was around. Then again that is the special gift the whole family has. I know this is hard for you, the kids and grandkids. I keep you in our prayers and know that my son Javier and my husband Domingo although only met you all briefly also remember you with much love. Mama at her 101 years also send her love and prayers and still remebers what a beautiful family you are. Love. Mari.

Dee
It was with great sadness that I returned to the United States to find a note about Roberts passing. I will always remember Robert as a young boy running and playing in or near the barn at Palo Alto. The Plantation will always remind me of Robert in his coat and tie at my aunt Coleens wedding so many years ago. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

with respect

Lemann Families, Robert was remembered in my thoughts & prayers upon hearing of his illness & passing. Just recently learned we had relatives in common, as Mrs. Camille's mother was a Daigle, I believe, whose brother, Bernard, married my grandfather's sister, Armide Bouchereau. Mrs. Vera Daigle Burke says Robert was her Godchild. I remember Robert from growing up in Dville & hearing lots about Palo Alto plantation. Sympathies to all the Lemanns,
