Robert Lindenmeyr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 23, 2011.
ROBERT (BOB) EDWIN LINDENMEYR, age 97, died peacefully at home in Haverford, PA on March 4th, 2011. He was born in New York City on May 24, 1913 and grew up in the German-American community on 14th St. in Manhattan and later on 121st St. in Harlem. He attended Horace Mann School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying naval engineering. He was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity, and maintained a lifelong connection with his fraternity brothers, meeting them regularly for poker games and reminiscences. He volunteered for the Navy before Pearl Harbor and spent most of World War II in the Pacific, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He met his future wife, Rosalie (Lee) Fairbanks, on a blind date while on leave in NYC in 1944. They were married six months later in 1945 and moved to Brooklyn, then to White Plains, NY, then later to Old Greenwich, CT where they raised their two daughters, Adele and Louise. Bob worked for many years for Great Lakes Carbon, Inc and retired in 1978, moving with his wife to Brewster, Ma. In 1999 they both moved to the Quadrangle in Haverford, PA. He will be remembered for his essential gentleness and grace, his love of German leider and opera, his passion for swimming in frigid waters, reading and re-reading the 11 volumes of Will and Ariel Durant's "The Story of Civilization." He enjoyed playing Parcheesi and putting together jigsaw puzzles with his two young daughters. He had a love-hate relationship with the game of golf, which he played for many years at the seaside Eastward Ho Country Club in Chatham, MA, and also at the Quadrangle. He played the piano daily with dedication, enjoyed the outdoors and read the New York Times from cover to cover until the day of his death. He had a marvelous memory and could recall many minute details of years long past, including the addresses of many speakeasies in Boston and NYC. His beloved wife of 59 years died in 2004 at the Quadrangle. He was a loving father to Adele Lindenmeyr of Merion, PA and Louise Lindenmeyr of Salisbury, CT; beloved father-in-law to Eliot Osborn of Salisbury, CT; and proud grandfather to Ellen Mossman of Philadelphia PA, and Rosalie and Nicolette Osborn of New York City and Salisbury CT. Donations to Planned Parenthood or the Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100 Arlington, VA, 22203 can be made in his honor.

We lived next door to Bob and Lee in Brewster and have very fond memories of our dear neighbors. So sorry to hear of the recent passing of Bob--he was a very special man.

Wherever great souls go, Bob Lindenmeyr is there. With one hand on the mainsail and another on the rudder , few navigated these earthly shoals with his grace and charm. Indelible is the memory of the twinkle in his eye...
