Robert Marcus Lodge passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at his home in Durham, North Carolina. He was 71.
Marc was born October 22, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Orlan Robert Lodge and Elizabeth Jane Lodge. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the varsity track team and graduated a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After serving as a U.S. Naval officer during the Vietnam War, he returned to UVA to earn his law degree and served as Executive Editor of the Virginia Law Review.
Marc met Suzanne Jenkins, of Greenville, North Carolina, in 1974. They were married in September of that same year and remained married the rest of his life.
In 1978, Marc began a career in law as an associate for King and Spalding in Atlanta. In the ensuing decade, he continued to practice law while pursuing other interests: from launching a computer business to publishing a novel.
Marc and Suzanne lived in various cities along the East Coast before making a home in Raleigh, where Marc continued his career as a lawyer for the State Attorney General's office. He served the state of North Carolina for over two decades. In 2017, he was awarded membership to The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, a distinction issued by the Governor for persons who have made significant contributions to the state through exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.
Marc is survived by his wife Suzanne; daughter Elizabeth Lodge Stepp and her husband Scott; son Robert Jenkins Lodge and his wife Abigail; and grandson Brooks Robert Lodge.
The family will receive family and friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 11th, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 1701 E Millbrook Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609.

I was very sad to learn of Marc's death. I have always had great respect for him as he seemed to have for everyone. As an official in DHHS, I was one of Marc's many clients. He listened carefully and offered wise counsel, and helpful suggestions on a wide variety of issues. He was also a friend who cared about the people he worked with and always seemed to try to do the right thing as well as the legal thing. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have known and worked with him for many years. He will be greatly missed.
