Professor Robert Bennett Lubic Esq. age 92, of Chevy Chase, DC, passed suddenly on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at home. Beloved husband, father, grandfather and teacher; He was also a writer, avid reader, chess player, and world traveler.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA., he lived in Washington, D.C. for over 65 years. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, University of Pittsburgh Law School (JD) and Georgetown University Law School (Masters in Law). After a stint at the FCC and a private law firm, he taught business and international law for 40 years at the Washington College of Law, American University. Bob was the Associate Dean during the riots in 1968 and received the outstanding teacher award from his students. He played a major role in creating a dozen study abroad law student programs in Jerusalem, Israel; Moscow and Leningrad, Russia; Warsaw, Poland; France, London, Japan, Hong Kong, and China. He co-taught in each of them. He taught at the International Christian University in Tokyo for a year, East China University in Shanghai for a semester and the University of Puerto Rico for a year.

Bob was an avid chess player and, as a member of the Cosmos Club competition chess team, he organized and played in chess tournaments in the U.S., London, Paris and Cuba. A voracious reader, he kept well occupied during the Pandemic while playing chess on line with his family and friends. His memory of world history was to be admired.

Some Comments from friends:
I have wonderful memories of sitting with Bob and hearing his stories. He was such a nice friend and a wonderful human being, who will be missed. So many memories from so many parts of the world over. So many delicious and exotic meals and let's not forget the most fascinating collection of the world's adult beverages that ever existed in one home. He was a mensch among men, a droll raconteur with a heart of gold. I will miss him. What a life well-lived doesn't make it easier - Condolences to you & your family Today, I lost one of my best friends. He was also my father, but most of all he was an incredibly special person. (Wendie) Wendie interviewed him for StoryCorps and he talked about being the "Hippie Dean." Gregory and I are very sad that your and our wonderful Bob has passed. Our hearts ache, but we are so much better off in this world for having known him. Gregory and I are lucky to have shared the London and Paris Chess adventure with him a few years ago. We are also so very lucky to have you both as our friends. Win and I were surprised and saddened, as were many of us, to hear that Bob had passed away. He was a man with an outgoing personality, fond of telling jokes and sharing a laugh with people he met. He also loved engaging in conversation on just about any topic. He was an avid chess player, as is Win, and if Win was out in the yard when he'd drive by our house, he'd invariably yell out "when are we going to play chess again?" His considerable accomplishments, both professional and personal, have already been mentioned. To us, they show he was not afraid to think big thoughts (e.g., a chess match in Cuba!) and see to it that they became a reality. But most of all, he was a man with a kind and generous heart, and he will be missed. My wife and I are so sorry to hear about Bob's passing, Please accept our deepest condolences. Bob was a great man and a great joy, and we could see that very clearly despite any age difference or the fact that we were neighbors for just two short years. I loved exchanging an occasional joke with him and hear about his life experiences, including his stay in Russia. We are very saddened to hear this news. We will miss seeing Bob when we were out for walks. He was so enthusiastic on so many topics and willing to take the time to talk to our kidsMemorial Service will be held at Temple Sinai, 3100 Military Road, NW, Washington, DC 20015 on September 20, 2021, at 2:00 P.M. (Masks and vaccination certificate required) The service will also be Zoomed. https://templesinaidc-org.zoom.us/j/84766347790
He will be interred at Arlington Cemetery at a later date.
