LUTES
ROBERT BLAINE
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died April 20, 2005, in his home. He was 81. A McKeesport native and World War II veteran who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and worked as a supervisor for U.S. Steel. He sang with a boys' choir in his youth and courted his wife of 55 years, Mary O'Neil Lutes, with a lilting tenor. A lifelong sports fan, he was always a reliable source of sports trivia, especially about Pittsburgh teams. He was a lector at St. Thomas a Becket Church and secretary of American Legion Post #712; he also served as a Little League coach, public library board member, and borough auditor. He is survived by his wife; his five children, Robert Blaine Lutes II, John O'Neil Lutes, Christopher T. Lutes, Elizabeth Lutes Hillman and Jean Marie Lutes; his five grandchildren, Catherine Jean Lutes, Robert Blaine Lutes III, Cody O'Neil Lutes, Elena Lutes Dueker and Vivian Lutes Dueker; and five siblings, Mary Jane Novotny, Edward Lutes, Janice Spear, Elinor O'Neil, and Roy Lutes. A memorial service will be held 10 am Monday, St. Thomas A'Becket Church and a reception will follow at the American Legion in Pleasant Hills. Donations in his memory may be made to Cloverleaf Food pantry, c/o Sister Mary Judith, St. Thomas A'Becket Church, Gill Hall Rd., Jefferson Hills, PA 15025.

Bob was my first Staff Supervisor at USS back in the mid-70s. I am now at the University of Miami, and learned of his passing from his brothers who's restaurant I frequent at lunch. My sympathies to his entire family for your loss.

My dear Uncle Bob, my godfather. He was such a big part of my childhood years. I will hold the memories of him dear to my heart forever. I will never eat an olive without thinking of him. To Bobby, Johnny, Chris, Beth and Jean, I love you guys and hope you know I cherish our childhood memories. Aunt Mary, you are such a strong positive person, thank you for showing all of us the bright side of life.

Thank you to all who view this obituary over the weekend. We will miss him very much, although we know he is safe and happy in heaven. It has been awhile since I saw my grandpa, but when we talked on the telephone, he always brought a smile to my face. We talked sports almost every conversation- I think he was surprised at first to have a granddaughter who could keep up with him! He will truly be missed.
